Senior Biomedical Scientist-Specimen Dissection

To be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service. The specific aim of the Senior BMS Band 7 role is to work alongside Consultant Pathologist and to dissect Cat A - C specimens independently as well as having knowledge and skills in complex dissection.

To manage and supervise specimen reception, dealing with queries in a timely manner in order to maintain patient care and prevent delays.

Assist with managing the day-to-day operations of a specific area of a laboratory service, at the hub or spoke laboratory, as an integral element of Pathology. To be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, alongside technical expertise to aid in the training and development of technical staff.

To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continual Professional Development (CPD)

To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality.

Main duties of the job

Specialist Knowledge - Dissection

  • Provide specialist scientific knowledge and work as a member of the team to assess, plan and contribute to the provision of a specialized service.
  • Assist the Service Manager, Technical Lead in the routine management of specimen reception and dissection room.
  • Undertake routine laboratory work within the section ensuring the work is performed in an efficient, organised and professional manner to provide a high quality, timely service.
  • Train and mentor more junior members of BMS staff and doctors in training as required in specimen dissection.
  • Assist in preparation and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other quality documentation relating to BMS Dissection, helping to ensure adherence to internal quality key performance indicators for document control.
  • Provide advice to both internal and external colleagues on the suitability of specimens for analysis and the correct specimen pathway required.
  • Work in compliance with local health and safety rules to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to department, directorate and Board Health and Safety policies (including COSHH, Risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) and to report any non‑compliances to the Service Manager or Technical Lead.

Job responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team providing a timely and accurate high quality Specimen Dissection service providing independent clinical practice for category B and C specimens under training/supervision.
  • Undertake histopathological dissection including the macroscopic description of surgically removed specimens, (weight, dimension, identification of anatomical and pathological features), examination, dissection and selection of tissue for further microscopical examination based on visible pathological features and assessment of the submitted clinical details.
  • Carry out laboratory investigations and procedures (intra-operative frozen sections) and undertake further investigations/procedures based on the results as required.
  • Apply specialised professional judgement, scientific knowledge and practical skills to complex problem solving and quality control issues and ensure that corrective actions occur in the event of non-compliance.
  • Help in the management of the section by supervising, organising and planning operational activities within the section and will report non-compliances to their manager.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a robust audit and slide review system for Specimen Dissection.
  • Advise service users on laboratory protocols and convey information in a concise and clear manner that will be of help to service users in formulating patient care plans and management.
  • Advise service users of the suitability of methods of fixation and preparation and ensure inappropriate requests and general department non-compliances are handled in the correct manner.

Qualifications

  • Bsc Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Msc Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Specimen Dissection
  • Substantial post HCPC Registration experience in the relevant Biomedical Science dissection discipline
