Project Officer (NBIF) – School of Engineering
Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK
Grade & Contract: Grade 6, Part‑time (22.5 hrs per week), Fixed‑term contract to July 2027
Salary: £33,002 – £35,608 per annum (potential progression to £39,906)

Role Summary
The role is part of a dynamic professional services team in the School of Engineering, supporting the National Buried Infrastructure Facility (NBIF), a £27.2 m research facility that operates large-scale underground experiments. The Project Officer will provide high-level project management support to the NBIF director and staff, ensuring successful delivery of research projects and operational activities.
Main Duties
* Support the running of the NBIF facility by liaising with HR, finance, procurement, and legal teams.
* Assist with small project set-up, including tendering, invoicing, and financial reporting.
* Carry out project planning activities: identifying milestones, tracking key performance indicators, collecting and analysing data, and preparing progress reports for project boards and stakeholders.
* Monitor budgets and accounts, ensuring spend remains within the funding envelope.
* Provide administrative support for NBIF advisory boards, including issuing invites, preparing agendas and compiling minutes.
* Maintain project communication plans, presentations, and NBIF website updates.
* Facilitate industry engagement activities, manage visitor logs and coordinate tours for academic teams.
* Support the Facility Manager with construction and design management documentation, estate repairs, and HSE requirements.
* Assist the NBIF director with annual reporting, student-sponsor allocations, and sustainability initiatives.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience
* Degree level education or equivalent professional experience in a similar role.
* Proven budget preparation and monitoring experience.
* Strong analytical and data-analysis skills.
* Excellent IT skills, including advanced MS Office.
* Good written and verbal communication, with ability to produce clear reports.
* Strong organisational and project-management skills; ability to manage priorities autonomously.
* Professional, diplomatic, and able to handle sensitive information with discretion.
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable
* Experience in an operational or administrative role supporting large-scale research.
* Familiarity with project-management tools.
