Responsibilities
The CPT I must meet the state regulatory certification requirements to work in the clinical laboratory. The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for analysis in the clinical laboratory, under the supervision of the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor. Responsibilities include:
1. Performing computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
2. Possessing adequate knowledge of test terminology ordered in the laboratory.
3. Demonstrating good communication skills and telephone etiquette when greeting patients and visitors.
4. Demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment use for patients from newborns to geriatrics.
5. Processing microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
6. Processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
7. Stocking routine supplies.
8. Maintaining cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
9. Processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation following established policies.
10. Assisting with sample pickup, sorting, storage, inventory, replenishing supplies, ordering supplies, mail pickup/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and product deliveries as assigned by the department manager/director.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, Training
* High School Diploma or equivalent required.
* Current and valid state certification as a CPT I required.
* Current BCLS (AHA) certification upon hire and maintained current.
* Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
