Mechanical Fitters Mate A Water Industry Mechanical Fitter installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical systems within water and wastewater infrastructure. This includes working on pipes, pumps, and valves in accordance with technical drawings, specifications, and safety regulations. Key duties include carrying out routine maintenance, diagnosing faults, and undertaking refurbishments, often in challenging environments such as confined spaces and at heights. The Mate supports the Fitter in all aspects of the role, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Key Responsibilities Installation & Fabrication: Assist with install and assemble pipes, valves, pumps, and other mechanical equipment for water and wastewater systems, potentially fabricating components as needed. Maintenance & Repair Assist with performing routine maintenance on machinery, including pumps, gearboxes, and compressors, and conduct repairs and refurbishments. Safety & Compliance Ensure all work complies with company and industry health and safety regulations, particularly in potentially hazardous environments like confined spaces. Teamwork Collaborate with engineers and project managers to meet specifications and work as part of a mechanical and electrical team. Technical Proficiency Essential Skills & Qualifications Ability to follow instruction from the Fitter. Tool Usage Competence in using a range of hand and power tools for assembly and maintenance tasks. Mechanical Knowledge Some experience with various mechanical systems, including pumps, pipework, and fluid power equipment. Safety & Certifications CSCS or equivalent safety card. Knowledge or training in water hygiene. Confined space training. Soft Skills Strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and a good level of physical fitness. Typical Work Environments Construction Sites Working on new installations and upgrades of water supply and wastewater pipelines. Treatment Plants & Facilities Performing maintenance and repairs on equipment within water and wastewater treatment facilities. Hazardous Locations: Operating in confined spaces, at height, or other challenging environments as part of the job.
