About the role
The post holder will be responsible for the management of a defined caseload of patients, providing specialist support, education and care to that specific group. Providing a high-quality patient-focused service that is sensitive to the needs of the patients and providers. The post holder will organise, prioritise and evaluate their workload based on the acceptance criteria.
The post holder will ensure continuing responsibility in the assessment of care needs including setting standards of care and taking a lead role in evidence based practice, demonstrating highly specialised knowledge and expertise in the management of patients with skin cancer.
The role of the skin cancer clinical nurse specialist will be Trust wide working on gate 25 the Oral Maxilo- facial service (OMFS) department and in the brand new Surgical Hub at Dewsbury District Hospital. The CNS will provide their own clinics and work alongside the OMFS Consultants that specialise in skin cancers.
The skin cancer CNS will be part of an established team of skin cancer CNS's that work within the Plastic Surgery and Dermatology department. The post holder will work as with the Multidisciplinary team and cancer management team to ensure that the cancer service complies with the national standards for safety and quality.
Main duties
Responsible on a day to day basis for a case load of patients
Providing holistic assessments : conducting skin checks while also assessing psychological, social and life style needs.
Demonstrating good communication skills,
Managing related clinic administration
Maintaining accurate appropriate and concise patient records, within agreed data bases and electronic systems.
Support for patients and families in breaking bad news, allowing time for discussions of any other concerns, associated with the diagnosis.
Referring and requesting diagnostic tests
Participating in one in stop clinics.
Prescribing or a willingness to undertake the prescribing course.
Review, interpret and act upon diagnostic investigations, liaising with Consultants and appropriate medical team.
Building strong working relationships with the OMFS Consultants, Skin CNS's and wider medical teams
Essential person specification requirements
Registered Nurse
First level (honours) degree or equivalent
Evidence of education at masters or working towards
Evidence of continued professional development
Recognised Teaching qualification
Relevant experience at Band 6
Leadership and management experience
Knowledge of the role
Knowledge of the of the patients needs within the specialist area.
IT literate
Excellent communication skills
