Job Purpose:

* Responsible for all laboratory activities with the Quality Control department (thereafter referred to as QC).
* Ensure that an effective system is in place for the identification, installation, maintenance and calibration of critical equipment.
* To maintain and improve when necessary the site quality standards: ISO 9001, ICH Q7, FEMAS, Kosher & BRC.
* Determining the effective use of resources e.g., staff familiarity with company equipment and software e.g.,Unity8

Main Responsibilities:

Laboratory Activities:

* Responsible for all laboratory activities with the Quality Control department (thereafter referred to as QC).
* Contribute to the efficient running of the QC laboratory ensuring that the requirements of internal customers are met.
* To ensure that appropriate procedures are in place to support the sample lifecycle including sampling, storage, testing, approval/rejection and disposal.
* Reviewing completed batch production and laboratory control records of critical process steps
* To ensure that all necessary testing is carried out and the associated records evaluated.
* Approval of certificates of analysis for products and review of batch records for food/feed/API when required.
* Approval of non-compliance reports and out of specification investigations.
* Perform root cause analysis and assign effective corrective/preventative actions
* Rejection of raw materials and final products where applicable
* Assist Quality Assurance with the investigation of customer complaints
* To approve specifications, sampling instructions, test methods and other Quality Control procedures when required.
* Ensure all test methods are appropriately validated/verified.
* Ensure a stability schedule is maintained and controlled, and that results are trended by appropriate means.
* Where a potential issue has been identified i.e. confirmed out of specification or out of trend, the matter is raised with senior management and the customer or concerned regulatory authority are contacted.

Laboratory Equipment

* Ensure that an effective system is in place for the identification, installation, maintenance and calibration of critical equipment.
* Evaluate the need for new equipment.
* Reviewing and approving qualification protocols and reports.

Quality Management System

* To maintain and improve when necessary the site quality standards: ISO 9001, ICH Q7, FEMAS, Kosher & BRC.
* Ensure that a high standard of laboratory hygiene is maintained.
* To ensure food safety, integrity, legality, and quality standards are maintained at all times.
* Ensure the effective implementation of the quality management system to achieve the quality objectives.
* Apply the principles of Quality Risk Management (ICH Q9) where appropriate throughout the product lifecycle.
* Maintain and promote compliance with data integrity requirements and Good Documentation Practice.
* Ensure investigations for deviations are completed to the require timelines and appropriate CAPA are implemented.
* Review organisation changes and impact on own department.
* Review and maintenance of laboratory procedures against standards and pharmacopeia when required.
* The approval and maintenance of raw material and product specifications to meet customer and standard requirements.
* The approval and monitoring of suppliers of materials and the prospective materials.
* The approval and monitoring of contract external laboratories.
* Ensuring that a timely and effective communication and escalation process exists to raise quality issues to the appropriate levels of management.
* Provide QC data for Product Quality Review
* Perform internal inspection of own and other departments when required

Staff and Training

* Determining the effective use of resources e.g., staff familiarity with company equipment and software e.g., Unity8
* To generally supervise QC laboratory staff and where necessary continue on-going training of QC personnel.
* To ensure that the required initial and continuing training of the department personnel is carried out and adapted according to need.
* To approve and monitor any contract analysts.
* Managing the performance of the team including appraisals, motivation of and setting personal objectives for staff.
* Management of effective training programmes within the department e.g. updating of skills matrix, use of internal procedures for training, continual assessment etc
* Where appropriate involvement on the discipline of staff e.g. hearing any grievances in line with company handbook.

Other

* To act as Deputy for the QA Manager in their absence.
* Comply to the requirements of Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) as a preventive controls qualified individual (PCQI) designee.
* Liaise with New Product Development during the introduction of new materials and products to QC.
* The monitoring and control of the manufacturing environment eg Plant hygiene and Process validation.
* Participation in management reviews of process performance, product quality and of the quality management system and advocating continual improvement.
* Ensure appropriate Health & Safety, COSHH, HACCP standards are maintained.
* Evaluating and improving organisational performance e.g., monitoring of KPIs to ensure objectives.
