A11R 26‑bed respiratory ward at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, caring for a diverse mix of acute and palliative patients including asthma, COPD and lung cancer.
Main responsibilities
* Co‑ordinate ward flow, patient safety and staff allocation.
* Act as Deputy Clinical Leader – make decisions in the absence of the Clinical Leader, hold medical bleep, conduct bed meetings and manage safe staffing.
* Work under pressure and maintain effective communication with the Clinical Site Team, Acute Medical Unit, Emergency Department, Management and Multi‑Disciplinary Teams.
* Organise and conduct staff appraisals, training, support and development.
* Address and resolve complaints, sickness management and adverse incidents.
Required qualifications and experience
* Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Minimum 2 years post‑qualifying experience at Band 5 or equivalent in acute medicine.
* Recognised teaching qualification.
* Degree or degree‑level qualification in nursing or related field.
* Post‑registration courses relating to respiratory care.
* Competency in acute care practice, including BIPAP, CPAP, Nasal High Flow, chest drains, venepuncture, cannulation and basic airway management.
* IT literacy using standard NHS software packages.
* Knowledge of clinical audit, sickness management, appraisal process, budget management and LERN/RCA training.
Additional requirements
Staff must be available to work flexibly across all Trust locations and may be required to relocate as part of the Trust’s transformation programme. NHS COVID‑19 vaccination is strongly encouraged, though not a condition of employment.
