Band 8a Surgical Care Practitioner - Kidney Cancer

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our highly reputable Specialist Kidney Cancer Team as a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP). This post is being offered as an 8A for a well-established SCP, or as a band 7 developmental role through which you will receive robust training to work you up to an 8A level.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide an expert SCP role in the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer. The successful applicant will have experience within the theatre environment and will work as an integral member of the Kidney Cancer and theatre team. The SCP will perform their extended role to provide high quality perioperative care across a range of robotic and laparoscopic kidney procedures.Audit and research interest is important for the role.The SCP will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multidisciplinary team and service users to ensure patients receive a seamless surgical experience.They will act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff and play a major role in the continuous development of the service.

Person Specification


Education & professional Qualifications

* Masters' degree in Surgical Care Practice (Qualified SCP)
* Appropriate teaching certificate or extensive teaching experience
* Advance communication skills course
* Evidence of recent professional / management / leadership development
* Basic Surgical Skills (RCS course)
* First Surgical Assistant Course (Intuitive-Da Vinci)
* Non-medical prescribing course or willingness to undertake
* Intravesical chemotherapy (mitomycin) administration course or willingness to undertake

Experience

* Extensive experience in Urology (Kidney) Robotic/Laparoscopic/Open Assisting as SCP for: ? Partial Nephrectomy ? Complex partial nephrectomy (i.e. multiple partial nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy on single kidney and multiple partial nephrectomy on single kidney) ? Radical Nephrectomy ? Retroperitoneal Partial/Radical Nephrectomy ? Nephroureterectomy ? Radical Nephrectomy with IVC thrombectomy ? Reconstructive surgery (i.e. Pyeloplasty and Ureteric reimplantation) ? Adrenalectomy ? Para-aortic Lymphadenectomy ? Cancer, benign and reconstructive kidney surgery
* Independent in flexible cystoscopy: ? Follow up flexible cystoscopy post nephroureterectomy for non-muscle invasive TCC and mascle invasive TCC ? Stent removal post pyeloplasty ? Preoperatively to nephroureterectomy for diagnostic purpose
* Experience in running nurse/SCP led clinic: ? Preoperative surgical clinic (including kidney biopsy) ? Follow up post kidney cancer treatment ? Active surveillance for kidney conditions ? Post-operative follow up SCP clinic
* Experience in a senior nurse role in an acute NHS setting
* Experience in perioperative management of complex surgical patients
* Able to use skills of history taking and physical assessment to direct patient care
* Extensive experience in theatres
* Experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Proven ability to initiate audits/research & assess evidence
* Knowledge and experience of leading significant change, delivering tangible and sustained improvement
* Experience of motivating staff and improving individuals and team performance
* Able to build rapport and credibility with senior clinical and managerial colleagues
* Experience of developing business and workplans in line with future service requirements
* Extensive knowledge and experience of practice and policy across a broad range of responsibilities, e.g. financial systems & budgetary control, corporate and clinical governance, health & safety and human resources
* Experience of managing employment relation issues
* Budgetary management skills


Skills and aptitudes

* Competencies as defined by the Curriculum Framework for Surgical Care Practitioners for the NHS National Practitioner programme
* Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
* Sound Knowledge of current issues in the profession and practice of nursing.
* Knowledge of quality standards & NICE recommendations/NSF
* Up to date knowledge of EAU guidelines
* Excellent skills in time management and organization
* Evidence of teaching / presentation skills
* Ability to conduct & evaluate own projects successfully, to act autonomously in planning & implementing tasks
* Ability to organise / coordinate diverse teams to deliver high standard of patient care
* Knowledge of current clinical / nursing / SCPs research
* Proven ability to influence others through research findings
* To prepare written reports and contribute to business planning and service delivery
* Open, participative, dynamic and supportive leadership with a flexible management style
* Ability to critically analyse data
* Advanced clinical, Managerial and leadership skills in specialty.
