Key responsibilities Clinical Duties Perform venepuncture safely and competently in accordance with local and national guidelines. Identify patients correctly using approved identification protocols. Ensure correct labelling, documentation, and handling of specimens. Prepare and maintain clinical areas before and after procedures.
Manage patients who may be anxious, needle-phobic, elderly, or vulnerable. Recognise and respond appropriately to adverse reactions (e.g., fainting). Maintain accurate patient records using the clinical system (e.g., EMIS, TQuest). Support infection prevention and control procedures.
Patient Care Provide a professional, compassionate, and reassuring service. Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and privacy at all times. Explain procedures clearly and obtain informed consent. Support patients with additional needs (e.g., learning disabilities, mobility issues).
Administrative & Organisational Duties Ensure timely dispatch of samples to pathology laboratories. Monitor and maintain adequate stock of clinical supplies. Report equipment faults or clinical incidents in line with practice policy. Participate in audit and quality improvement activities where required.
