Join to apply for the Bridges and Structures Inspector role at Dorset Council UK
What’s in it for you?
You will be joining the Bridges and Structures Team at Dorset Council and helping to maintain Dorset Highways' bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other structures.
The team delivers maintenance projects and new structures from inception to construction, with regular inspections forming the foundation of that process. As a key team member, you will inspect, monitor, and report on the condition of structures to help prioritize maintenance or replacement needs.
You will play an important role in ensuring Dorset's bridges and structures remain safe and fit for purpose, enabling safe travel and supporting the local economy.
We encourage hybrid and flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance.
What will you be doing?
As an Inspector, you will inspect road bridges, footbridges, culverts, retaining walls, and vehicle restraint systems. Your inspections will initiate maintenance or replacement actions.
You will be the eyes and ears of the Bridge Team in the field. Most work will be outdoors, with travel facilitated by a Dorset Council van. One day per week, you will work from the office or home to compile reports, plan routes, and meet with engineers via Microsoft Teams to discuss findings.
You will work closely with a colleague but also independently on smaller structures, and jointly on larger or complex structures requiring special access or safety measures.
Occasional work during evenings or nights may be required for traffic management and safety.
About You
Prior knowledge of bridges or construction techniques is advantageous but not essential; training and mentoring will be provided. You will undertake a Bridge Inspector training course and work towards an accredited qualification under the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS).
You should be observant, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in water, confined spaces, at heights, or on the highway. The role is physically demanding, requiring navigation of rough terrain, climbing, and possibly entering manholes or pipes.
You must be confident in communication, both written and verbal, to discuss inspections and interact with the public, sometimes in sensitive situations.
