A vacancy has arisen for a Sergeant (Air Tech W) to serve as SNCO Explosives Safety Licensing at RAF Wittering on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of 04 May 2026 (or earlier/later, subject to candidate status). Reporting to SO2 Explosives Safety (ES) via the Chain of Command, the incumbent will work as part of the HQ Air Licensing Team, responsible for the review and staffing of Explosives License applications, directional weapons and safeguarding maps to HQ Air to Inspector of Explosives (RAF) for authorisation and the provision of Subject Matter Expert (SME) licensing advice and guidance to Units. Specific responsibilities include: Responsible for the review, validation and staffing on Unit Explosives License applications (MOD Form 1658 and 1659) to Inspector of Explosives (RAF) for approval. Responsible for the review, validation and staffing of Unit Safeguarding and Directional Weapon maps in accordance with DSA 03.OME Pt 2. Responsible for maintaining the Licensing Register for Air issued Explosives Licenses, Unit Maps and Registered Locations iaw DSA 03.OME Pt 2. Undertake, as required, Unit / site visits to assist local licensing offices with the generation of Explosives Licenses, providing coaching and mentorship. Provide SME licensing advice and assistance to the CoC to inform Explosive Safety Cases and Acceptance of Risk where explosives regulations cannot be met. Support the generation of single Service licensing policy, Armament Instructions and Notices to ensure Air remains compliant with Defence Regulation changes. Support strategic plans to increase Air estate’s explosives capacity through the provision of specialist licensing advise to the Chain of Command / Command Groups. Responsible for deputising, as required, for Chf Tech and FS Explosives Safety, representing them and the interests of the HQ Air ES Office. This post offers the ability to work remotely / flexibly to support the applicant’s needs; this should be discussed during the interview stage.
