GCSE Tutor Job Description The role involves providing tailored tuition to students preparing for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations. The successful candidate works closely with individual students or small groups to enhance their understanding of subject content, improve examination techniques, and build confidence. This position requires delivering clear, structured lessons that align with current GCSE syllabuses, assessing student progress regularly, and adapting teaching methods to meet individual learning needs. Job Duties Plan, prepare and deliver engaging and effective tuition sessions in one or more GCSE subjects. Assess students’ academic needs and identify areas requiring improvement. Develop bespoke learning plans tailored to each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Provide constructive feedback and support to help students achieve targeted grade outcomes. Monitor and record student progress, adjusting teaching approaches as necessary. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GCSE curriculum changes and examination requirements. Support students in developing revision strategies and examination techniques. Communicate effectively with parents or guardians, where appropriate, regarding student progress. Ensure a safe and respectful learning environment that encourages academic growth. Required Qualifications Relevant subject qualification at degree level or equivalent in the subject(s) taught. Strong knowledge of the GCSE curriculum and assessment criteria. Experience working with secondary school students, preferably in a tutoring or teaching capacity. Education Degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant subject area. Teaching qualification or certificate in education is desirable but not essential. Experience Previous tutoring or teaching experience with GCSE students. Experience adapting teaching methods to suit individual learning styles. Experience preparing students for formal examinations. Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive understanding of GCSE subject content and examination standards. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve their full potential. Organisational skills to manage lesson planning and student records efficiently. Patience and flexibility to work with students of varying abilities and backgrounds. Proficient use of educational resources and technology to support learning. Preferred Qualifications Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent certification. Experience in delivering tuition across multiple GCSE subjects. Familiarity with remote or online tutoring platforms. Working Conditions Part-time hours, with flexibility to accommodate student availability, including evenings and weekends. Temporary contract, with potential for extension based on demand. Work may take place at students’ homes, tuition centres, or remotely via online platforms.
