Job Summary
A permanent vacancy has arisen within the Estates & Facilities Directorate for a Trainee Estates Officer to join the Barts Heath NHS Trust. The job is based at Whipps Cross Hospital but may be required to work at other hospitals and health care premises within Barts Health NHS Trust.
Duties cover the full range of Estates engineering services including planned and breakdown maintenance, servicing and repair of buildings and fixtures throughout the hospital estate. Key responsibilities include developing the hospital's digital estates information systems and providing specialist support for the hospital’s critical security infrastructure systems. The post is designed to develop an ambitious engineering graduate into a potential NHS Estates senior leader of the future while building key skills and experience improving the estates systems at the hospital.
The basic working week is 37.5 hours, Monday‑Friday 08:30 to 16:30. Flexibility for overtime and call‑outs is required. The position is eligible for the NHS pension scheme along with a wide range of staff benefits, including annual leave of 27 days on appointment, rising to 29 days after 5 years and 33 days after 10 years.
Main Duties
* Support the full breadth of all acute hospital building services and specialist engineering systems.
* Ensure compliance with Health and Safety Control, Asbestos, COSHH and permit‑to‑work systems at all times.
* Report any non‑safe practices or faulty equipment that could affect safety.
* Follow departmental and Trust operating policies and procedures.
* Work independently within standard operating procedures, prioritising the work schedule.
* Maintain good working relationships and communicate effectively with non‑specialists.
* Hold AP accreditations and perform Authenticated Person duties.
* Participate in the Estates On‑Call rotas covering various Trust sites as directed.

Person Specification
Education – Essential:
* HND/Degree level in Building Services, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
Education – Desirable:
* Masters qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
* Associate membership of an Engineering Council professional body.
Experience – Essential:
* At least 1 year of relevant NHS hospital or similar environment experience.
* Experience in building maintenance and systems.
* Experience working with specialist hospital equipment.
* Knowledge of H&S legislation and hospital specifics (HTM).
Experience – Desirable:
* Additional relevant experience.
Knowledge – Essential:
* Good knowledge of H&S legislation and some COSHH.
* Excellent computer skills.
