Job Overview

Are you an Orthoptist looking to develop your career in further education? Do you have a passion to deliver core Orthoptic knowledge and skills to the next generation? If yes, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust welcomes applications for the newly created MSc practice educator role on the UCL MSc Orthoptic (pre‑reg) programme. The post holder will hold an honorary contract with UCL IoO and be employed by Moorfields Orthoptic Service.


Main Duties

The role is key to ensuring students are supported across the duration of their studies to develop core Orthoptic knowledge, skills and behaviours, across academic and clinical teaching (lectures, clinical skills labs, tutorials) and assessment (preparing assessments/rubrics, marking/feedback).

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities


Leadership

* Lead curriculum module review and on‑going development.
* Co‑ordinate learning activities and assessment to HCPC requirements aligned with the Intended Learning Outcomes.
* Work collaboratively with the MSc Programme Leads, Module Leads and the Head of Orthoptics at MEH as a clinical partner on behalf of the Trust.
* Engage in appropriate scholarship in your discipline to support excellent research and evidence‑based teaching within the MSc (pre‑registration) programme.


Education

* Coordinate and contribute to Orthoptic‑led teaching, developing the module syllabus; ensuring the content aligns with the core curriculum and the Intended Learning Outcomes.
* Ensure the development and provision of core course material for the module is up to date and aligned to the curriculum map, including on‑line resources and e‑learning.
* Prepare high quality teaching materials for tutorials and support communication with students to develop critical thinking and practical skills.
* Provide a title and brief description of the tutorial/workshop content for use in the Student Handbook, Moodle pages and websites.
* Compile a reading list of essential /required readings for tutorials and submit these to the Librarian and Senior Teaching & Learning Administrator annually.
* Forward all teaching materials, student exercises and attendance registers to the Senior Teaching & Learning Administrator for filing.
* Collect clinical data and build simulation resources for the BIOS Hub/PERL.
* Support clinical and academic supervision and tutoring of students as directed by Programme Leads.
* Provide pastoral support role for students, acting as personal tutor, clinical link tutor and UCL tripartite tutor duties.
* Promote the development of excellence in learning and teaching through personal scholarly activity.
* Support CPD and knowledge‑exchange activity.


Assessment

* Deliver assessment with awareness of local processes for assessment and marking (incl. second marking, moderation, feedback and external examiner role/responsibilities).
* Work with Programme Leads and other Module Leads to determine the content of written, practical and clinical assessment aligned with the intended learning outcomes.
* Participate in writing and reviewing assessment materials for formative and summative examinations ensuring participation by module teachers.
* Participate in practical and clinical assessments, marking and assistance with marking for other modules.
* Co‑ordinate module assessments and coursework.
* Provide constructive written and oral feedback on formative and summative assessment in a timely manner (within one calendar month of submission).


Quality Assurance

* Actively engage in appropriate training and development to comply with mandatory requirements and sustain excellence in teaching activity.
* Respond to issues raised through UCL quality monitoring and assurance mechanisms to ensure appropriate follow‑up action, including course evaluation and implementing innovations.
* Engage with development groups/exam board/external examiner and respond to external audits, reviews and assessment.
* Support educational appraisal.


Student Feedback

* Ensure the content of student feedback forms about the module is correct and distributed to students in good time.
* Review student feedback, meet with Course Tutors (and other Module staff if necessary) to discuss feedback and compile a response to students.


Person Specification


Essential Criteria

* Evidence of CPD / professional development.
* Evidence of delivering clinical education.
* Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Orthoptics.
* Extensive experience in a hospital setting – orthoptic and sub‑speciality clinics.
* Assessment experience in a clinical or academic setting.
* Evidence of CPD and learning beyond qualification.
* Experience of delivering clinical education, training and supervision.


Desirable Criteria

* Experience of research and student supervision.
* Experience of curriculum development.
* Experience of developing protocols and competencies.
* Experience of contributing authors aligned to the curriculum map.
* Specific area of relevant research to contribute to teaching.


Registration & Qualification


Essential Criteria

* HCPC Registered as an Orthoptist.
* Recognised degree in Orthoptics with considerable postgraduate experience.
* Teaching qualification or working towards a recognised qualification or equivalent experience.


Desirable Criteria

* Evidence of a specific area of relevant research to contribute to teaching.
