Overview
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in General Medicine in the Internal Medicine Division, based at St Richard's Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. General Medicine is an area that is expected to grow, and we are recruiting a dynamic and motivated workforce to help develop and improve services offered in the Trust. This role would attract candidates with a particular specialist interest or those keen to work solely within General Internal Medicine.
The incumbent aims to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients while contributing to improvements in mortality, patient experience, length of stay, and related measures. The team is looking to develop further community work and collaborate with system partners to develop pathways that prevent protracted hospital admissions. The post holder will work with the multi-disciplinary team and Physician colleagues across the Trust, and will support and develop the inpatient wards at St Richard’s Hospital, with opportunities to work at other sites as required.
Responsibilities
* Support the GIM inpatient service and supervise the Ward multidisciplinary team and other GIM wards where needed.
* Have responsibility for inpatients at University Hospital Sussex at the relevant hospital site, delivering daily ward input as required.
* Provide appropriate cover for patients admitted under the care of another paired consultant during absence on leave of colleagues.
* Provide education to the wider MDT as part of the GIM educational program.
* Contribute to general professional training of junior members of the department and to the training of nurses and other staff.
* Participate in activities of the Postgraduate Medical Centre, including Medical and Clinical Audit.
* The on-call commitment for the medical rota is 1 in 14, with 1 in 8 Saturdays and Sundays post-take ward rounds worked with prospective cover.
Qualifications and expectations
The role seeks candidates with specialist interest in General Internal Medicine or a willingness to work primarily within General Internal Medicine. Specific qualifications are not listed in this description; the successful candidate will align with the responsibilities above and contribute to service development and education.
