About the role
This is a pivotal, high‑impact leadership position in the Chief Scientist’s Group (CSG) within the Environment and Business Directorate. The successful candidate will design, launch, and lead an innovation pipeline that transforms scientific research and technical solutions into operational practice across the Environment Agency.
Responsibilities
* Lead the development and implementation of an innovation pipeline for the CSG, ensuring real‑world impact and rapid adoption of new ideas.
* Coordinate and manage the end‑to‑end journey of innovation projects from concept to operational integration, working with national and local teams, science, policy and operations units.
* Forge and nurture strategic partnerships with Defra’s Innovation Team, Innovate UK, the Catapult Network and other external partners to pilot and roll‑out innovations.
* Represent the Agency and CSG in engagements with funding bodies, private sector organisations and government stakeholders.
* Drive cross‑functional collaboration across the Environment Agency to embed evidence, expertise, and innovation in policy development and delivery.
* Champion inclusive practices, encouraging diverse perspectives in all innovation processes.
Qualifications & Skills
* Extensive experience delivering innovative technical solutions at pace within large, complex organisations.
* Deep understanding of innovation strategy, pipeline development, and partnership management in the public sector.
* Robust background in environmental sciences and data collection, with the ability to interpret technical problem statements and communicate with credibility to sceptical audiences.
* Exceptional communication and stakeholder management – able to build trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
* Experience of working effectively with diverse teams and actively championing inclusivity.
* Strong programme and project management skills, with a track record of using governance mechanisms to accelerate organisational performance.
