An exciting opportunity is available for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker post in the Community Respiratory Team of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will work alongside the overall clinical team supporting with the Pulmonary Rehabilitation, admission avoidance and assisted discharge, and diagnostic spirometry pathways.


Main duties of the job

To work as part of the Respiratory Team to carry out a wide range of duties under the direction of the senior team members maintaining a high quality service to patients and carers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


Main Duties

* Provide a high standard of care to patients working in accordance with the trust and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
* Communicate daily with the Senior Respiratory Team members ensuring accurate and effective workload instructions are disseminated and report back information about patients.
* Provide support and advice to patients and carers under the direction of the allocating senior team member and contribute to the co-ordination of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme when required.
* Assist in providing interventions and/or treatment for patients supported by the respiratory services. This includes undertaking tasks to support biomedical investigations such as obtaining clinic samples. The post holder will be required to undertake a range of procedures. These may include (for example) patient height and weight measurements, blood pressure and oxygen saturation recordings, teaching inhaler device techniques, collecting sputum samples for investigation, preparing and maintaining the clinical environment, monitoring and upkeep of stock levels, decontamination of equipment, raising awareness of health promotion issues such as smoking cessation, attending team / professional meetings, maintaining accurate, timely and legible records, undertaking general office and administration duties, using the Respiratory Team to maintain high standards of care, participating in Health Promotion activities such as attendance at Health Events, promoting the rights of and supporting the diversity of patients, and other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant line manager.
* Minimise the Trust’s environmental impact wherever possible, including recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use, reducing paper waste, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel, and considering the environmental impact of purchases.


Person specification


Qualifications/training

* NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
* Respiratory experience understanding of condition, limitations, the deteriorating patient, management etc


Experience

* Dealing with members of the public. Working in a clinic/home environment.
* Experience in a Health/Social care setting


Skills and Knowledge

* Demonstrate an interest in Respiratory care.
* Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Health Care Support worker.
* Practice in a safe, confident manner, awareness of health and safety issues in the home/work place.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Work as part of a team and organise own workload.
* Reflect on and understand the scope and limitations of the role and know when to raise concerns to a Senior member of staff for support or action.
* Attend relevant study days to maintain up to date and safe practice along with continued personal development.
* Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clients and carers.
* Experience of Primary Care Setting.
* Computer skills an advantage.

In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.

Please note that the majority of non‑clinical roles (Agenda for Change Band 3 - 6) with the exception of those which appear on this list - link, will not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK.

All non‑clinical roles (Agenda for Change Bands 7 - 9) that meet the prescribed skill level (RQF 6) and salary threshold will be eligible for sponsorship.
