Overview
Are you a dedicated and compassionate Clinical Pharmacist? Do you want the chance to help shape a new and genuinely innovative service for the women of Kent and Medway? We are creating Kent and Medway's first, and only, NHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for women, and are seeking a talented Clinical Pharmacist to help us deliver this vital service.
Please note that the start date for this post will be February 2026, to allow for onboarding, induction, and training before the anticipated arrival of the first patient in April 2026.
This role would suit pharmacists with previous mental health and hospital experience who are looking to consolidate their skills, as well as those with a genuine interest in mental health from another sector. You will also have the opportunity to work across all the bedded wards in the Dartford locality.
You will be provided with opportunities for personal growth and development, including support for post-graduate qualifications in mental health pharmacy. Some of our pharmacists are qualified as independent prescribers and the opportunities to qualify and practice as prescribers will grow as our team does.
This role comes with a High Cost Area Supplement: 5% of basic salary, subject to a min. of £1303 per year and a max. of £2198 per year (divided into 12 equal amounts and paid monthly). The salary listed is inclusive of the High-Cost Area Allowance.
Responsibilities
1. Provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the female psychiatric intensive care unit as part of the local pharmacy team's rotational model.
2. Develop close working relationships with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and contribute to clinical care plans.
3. Respond to medication-related queries, provide advice on prescribing, and promote evidence-based practice.
4. Discuss medication with patients and carers and develop approaches to support informed care.
5. Work closely with and liaise with other pharmacy colleagues across localities and community mental health teams to maintain high-quality medicines management and optimisation.
6. Educate colleagues (including doctors and nurses) about medicines management and medicines optimisation.
About us
Working in a PICU is rewarding but demanding. It is likely to involve care for people with severe and complex mental health conditions. You would be part of a multidisciplinary team ensuring access to specialist care for women, with parity of access alongside male cohorts.
We are recruiting now to ensure the new female PICU team is in place with time to train, form team bonds, and prepare so you can make a profound difference to patient outcomes from day one. We also offer ongoing professional development, including bespoke training and a comprehensive induction program.
At KMPT, we are serious about diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds and are proactively encouraging applications from under-represented communities for senior roles like this one.
