Job title: Shift Lead (Nights)
Reporting to: Production Manager
Location: Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk
Hours: 38 hours per week (Monday to Thursday, 20:45 – 06:15)
The Opportunity
The post holder will be responsible for the night shift operation of manufacturing, supporting the Production Manager with the day‑to‑day management of the manufacturing area, overseeing operation, and ensuring a safe and an efficient operation in achieving business targets.

What You’ll Be Doing
* Report accurately and effectively on daily production progress, including delays and their causes, to the Production Manager.
* Liaise with Production Planners regarding manning levels and scheduling of production tasks.
* Communicate with the planning department and other support functions to ensure the weekly OTIF plan is followed.
* Organise workloads for operators and ensure a minimum 95% labour utilisation, addressing gaps through root cause analysis.
* Investigate the root cause of all complaints, CAPAs, and five‑whys, and implement corrective actions.
* Serve as Site Incident Controller for the shift, complying with COMAH requirements.
* Perform yield analysis to ensure product yields are met and take corrective action for low yields.
* Complete a comprehensive written shift report and verbally hand over to ensure safe, efficient running of all processes.
* Control stock and ensure accuracy of stock in production areas, facilitating stock checks as agreed.
* Maintain high standards of GMP & BRC compliance in all aspects of production.
* Exhibit a good awareness of COSHH, risk assessment, HAZOP, and general process safety, and take the lead in promoting a safety culture.
* Monitor team performance and work with HR to address poor performance, supported by the Production Manager.
* Conduct 1‑2‑1s with all manufacturing night shift staff, capturing communication as required.
* Implement the training plan, ensuring operators have a programme addressing competency gaps.
* Ensure SOPs and process cleaning procedures are relevant and up‑to‑date, training records are current, and all safety‑critical tasks are trained.
* Ensure fortnightly toolbox talks and risk assessments are carried out on schedule, alongside safety bulletins.
* Analyse distillation processes to achieve maximum yields with efficient processing.
* Maintain site security out of hours, ensuring all buildings are locked, alarmed, and problems are reported through the security system.
* Investigate accidents and incidents, writing reports with recommendations for the Production Manager.
* Manage stock in compliance with health & safety standards and COMAH requirements for material segregation.
* Contribute to food hygiene, HACCP, and quality, ensuring all regulations are met.
* Promote an excellent safety culture, especially around manual handling, vehicle/pedestrian safety, PPE, and incident reporting.
What We’re Looking For
* GCSE level or equivalent education.
* Qualifications in team leading or training, such as ILM Level 3 or higher.
* A can‑do attitude with a pro‑active, hands‑on approach.
* Previous experience of team leading within a manufacturing environment.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to lead and motivate others.
* Self‑motivation and strong relationship‑building skills.
* Understanding of BRC and customer quality standards.
* Experience working in a LEAN environment.
* Good experience using MS Office and company systems (JDE, STARS, TIPPS, EXCEL).
