Geotechnical or geo-environmental field engineer

Burgess Hill
Land Science Ltd
Field engineer
Posted: 22 October
Offer description

We are recruiting for a geotechnical or geo-environmental engineer to be based out of our head office in West Sussex, to work in our ground investigation teams. Ideally you will either be a recent graduate (geotechnical, civil or environmental science, etc) or be an existing technican looking to expand technical knowledge and take your career to the next level.

The role will be an interesting and varied mix of work, primarily based in the field working alongside our team of technicians. The role will provide an excellent foundation to a career in geotechnical engineering and contaminated land industries, with the pathway to becoming a consultant and possibly chartered.

We are a diverse multidisciplinary team of Engineers, Geologists and Scientists engaged on an interesting and varied range of ground investigation projects in the residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure sectors. We provide a combination of factual and interpretive reports for a range of clients including self-builders, construction professionals and the public sector. Our projects are primarily based in the UK, and range in size from the most basic service for homeowners up to major development projects. We are expanding our in-house range of laboratory and contracting capabilities. We endeavour to innovate and be leaders in our industry.

In geotechnical projects, we typically provide design parameters and advice for foundation design, basement construction, earthworks, and to assess issues such as subsidence and slope stability. In contaminated land projects, we routinely carry out GQRA and DQRA for soils, groundwater and ground gasses, and we supervise remediation projects and provide verification reports.

Initially the role will provide comprehensive training and broad experience in every aspect of the ground investigation process, including the preparation of desk studies, planning and supervising fieldwork, logging rock and soil cores, preparing testing schedules, gas and groundwater monitoring, preparation of factual data, and factual report writing. We will offer a combination of formal training and on-the-job experience. With more experience you will in due course have the opportunity to run larger or more complex ground investigation contracts and be exposed to interpretive report writing.

In time, at Senior level (typically 5 years) you will manage your own projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, on budget, and to the client's requirements; you will be competent in report writing and be able to review the work of others ready for authorisation and issue. Other opportunities will include representing the company at seminars and events, developing in-house systems, and taking responsibility for different strategic areas of work within the business.

With strong interpersonal skills and self-confidence, you should have an eye for detail, enjoy seeking solutions to technical challenges, and have an all-round flair and passion for your profession. You will be required to work on your own initiative and take responsibility for delegated tasks, and be committed to quality and safety.

Ground investigation is an interesting and rewarding career in the long term, and it is an exciting time to join our business as we look to expand and build on our excellent reputation for quality and client focus. As a growing SME, we offer the opportunity to experience all aspects of the business, and thus develop your career in a rounded way. There are significant future opportunities for the right candidate to develop with the company, to become a manager and even set-up a future regional office.

A full, clean driving licence is essential, and applicants must be eligible to work in the UK. It is a mandatory requirement of the role to pass basic safety training on joining the business, and full training is given. Due to the nature of the role working in the field, candidates are required to offer a degree of flexibility in working hours and occasional travel away from home.

A competitive remuneration package will be offered, depending on qualifications and experience, starting in the range of £23-£28K per annum although we may consider a higher salary if you have existing experience. The role is based on a 42.5hr working week, with a flexible working pattern, 23 days paid holiday (increasing to 28 after 5 years), a workplace pension, paid membership of a professional institution, site subsistence allowances, and other benefits.

Applicants should send a full CV with a brief covering email. We do not take applications through recruitment agencies.
