Person specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
1. Fully registered with GMC.
2. Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview
3. Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
4. Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
5. Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Anaesthesia to start Consultant appointment
Experience
Essential criteria
6. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective – including anaesthesia for major upper and lower abdominal surgery, thoracic, head and neck, ECT and obstetric surgery and interventions
7. Evidence of a specialist interest in at least one of the following areas: major general, advanced airway anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, obstetric anaesthesia
8. Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
9. Evidence of a developing a specialist service or demonstration of innovation in chosen sub-specialty
10. Higher acute pain training or experience
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
11. Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
12. Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
13. Log book evidence of max fax, head and neck, thoracic, Oesophago gastric, colorectal, HPB, Preoperative assessment, obstetrics and pain
Desirable criteria
14. Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
Essential criteria
15. Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
16. Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
17. Positive approach to evidence based practice
18. Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
Research
Essential criteria
19. Knowledge of the principles involved in research
20. Evidence of involvement in research
21. Evidence of peer review research papers
Desirable criteria
22. Ability to increase the academic profile of the department
Teaching and Training
Essential criteria
23. Experience of teaching medical students
24. Experience of supervising trainees.
25. Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

26. Formal teaching qualification
