Main duties of the job
The Security Supervisor (Band 5) is responsible for overseeing and managing the hospital’s security and car parking operations, ensuring the safety and protection of staff, patients, and visitors while maintaining efficient traffic management. They provide leadership and direction to Band 3 Security Supervisors, Security Team Leaders, Car Parking Supervisors, and Car Parking Wardens, ensuring compliance with NHS security policies, crime prevention strategies, and incident management protocols. The role involves investigating security breaches, managing incidents of violence and aggression, overseeing CCTV and body-worn camera operations, and working closely with police, legal teams, and NHS leadership to address security concerns. Additionally, they are responsible for enforcing car parking policies, managing off-site parking contracts, optimising traffic flow on hospital grounds, and ensuring fair enforcement of parking regulations. They also oversee staff training and development, maintain security and parking policies and procedures, and support service improvements. Acting as a key decision-maker in crisis situations, the Security Supervisor ensures a safe, controlled, and well-managed hospital environment, promoting a proactive, compassionate, and effective security and parking culture.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Security Supervisor (Band 5) plays a key leadership role in managing Band 3 Security Supervisors and Security Team Leaders, ensuring the security service operates effectively across St. Richard’s Hospital & Worthing Hospital.
* Line manage Security Supervisors (Band 3), Security Team Leaders, and Security Officers.
* Provide operational direction, guidance, and supervision to the security team.
* Deputise for the Security & Car Parking Manager when required.
* Ensure staff adhere to Trust policies, security procedures, and legal regulations.
* Manage staff rotas, shift cover, and performance appraisals.
* Monitor and support staff wellbeing, particularly after distressing incidents.
2. Security & Incident Management
* Respond to and oversee the management of security incidents, including violence, aggression, theft, and unauthorised access.
* Ensure evidence is gathered and preserved for criminal or internal investigations.
* Provide specialist security advice to ward/department managers and Trust leadership.
* Support police investigations and liaise with legal teams on criminal cases.
* Lead on crime prevention strategies and implement security risk assessments.
* Oversee CCTV operations, body-worn camera use, and ensure GDPR compliance.
* Develop and enforce security lockdown procedures in emergencies.
3. Violence & Aggression Prevention
* Lead on violence reduction initiatives and support NHS-wide strategies.
* Investigate and report incidents of physical and verbal abuse against staff.
* Ensure victims of workplace violence receive appropriate support.
* Implement de-escalation techniques and encourage a trauma-informed security approach.
4. Car Parking & Traffic Management
* Oversee the day-to-day management of car parking facilities across hospital sites.
* Support traffic flow management and enforce parking regulations.
* Manage off-site parking contracts and ensure fair enforcement.
5. Policy Development & Compliance
* Ensure the Trust remains compliant with NHS security policies and regulations.
* Contribute to and update key security policies, including: Prevention & Management of Violence PolicyPhysical Security & Intervention PolicyHospital Lockdown ProceduresTraffic Management & Car Parking Policy
* Conduct crime reduction audits and implement security improvements.
6. Communication & Reporting
* Provide detailed reports and analysis on crime trends, security breaches, and incident response.
* Liaise with police, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and NHS legal teams.
* Present findings and security updates to senior management and department leads.
* Conduct briefings and debriefs following serious incidents.
* Deliver security awareness training to hospital staff and managers.
7. Training & Staff Development
* Ensure all security officers and supervisors receive statutory and mandatory training.
* Deliver in-house training on conflict management, crime prevention, and legislation.
* Support new staff inductions and mentor junior security team members.
* Develop staff competency in managing challenging behaviour and crisis response.
8. Service Development & Improvement
* Identify opportunities to enhance security services and implement best practices.
* Ensure security systems, equipment, and procedures are regularly reviewed and updated.
* Support the implementation of new technologies and security innovations.
* Work with estates and capital projects teams to incorporate security into new building developments.

Person specification
Experience
* Level 3 Security First Line Manager qualification or equivalent
* Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of EDI within a Healthcare setting
* Full UK Driving Licence (Car)
* Member of the National Association for Healthcare Security
* Educated to degree level or experience gained to equivalent level through training.
* Experience of working in NHS administrative or management roles.
* A good understanding of the principles of project management. Ability to manage a range of projects simultaneously.
