The role
As a Principal Engineer - Nuclear Process, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary where you’ll lead the provision of technical support to nuclear implicated submarine maintenance activities on Western Europe’s largest Naval Base and one of the UK’s Nuclear Licensed Sites. You’ll support the development and operation of new facilities for defuel of decommissioned nuclear submarines, and will provide technical guidance on the safe transfer, storage, treatment and disposal or radioactive liquid effluent from in-service submarines.
Responsibilities as a Principal Engineer will include:
1. Acting as subject matter expert and leading the provision of advice to the Head of Nuclear Engineering Group, other Principal Engineers and key stakeholders from the wider business on the implementation and maintenance of design documentation
2. Managing and developing a team of Engineers with varying levels of seniority/experience
3. Leading the delivery of work packages in accordance with the design process (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detailed and Implementation phases) in order to maintain and improve capabilities
4. Managing the production, checking and approval of technical documentation and drawings
5. Leading engineering analyses including calculations, component structural analysis and system fluid flow analysis
6. Controlling modifications to the design intent of nuclear process plant and equipment
7. Ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards and regulations (including Site Licence Conditions)
This role is full time - 36 hours and will be based at on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard with hybrid working from home arrangements.
Essential knowledge and experience of the Principal Engineer - Nuclear Process:
8. Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles for the design, operation and maintenance of pressure/pipework systems
9. Knowledge of the considerations for safe design, operation and maintenance or nuclear/radiologically implicated systems
10. Experience leading a team of engineers in a design or technical support function
11. Experience using engineering software packages (e.g. for computer aided design, stress analysis or fluid flow)
12. Experience in the design, operation or maintenance of pressure systems in a highly regulated industry
13. Experience in the application of, and demonstration of compliance with, legislation, engineering standards and design codes
14. Knowledge of the design lifecycle and experience of leading work within it
15. Experience in project specification, planning and budgeting
Qualifications for the Principal Engineer - Nuclear Process:
16. A degree in a Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
17. Professional membership as a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution (or evidence of working towards this with demonstrable experience)
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
