We are seeking a passionate and committed Lecturer in English to join our team at Sandwell College on a full-time, permanent basis. As a Lecturer in English (Functional Skills), you will deliver high-quality teaching to learners across a range of programmes, helping them to build confidence and competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You will play a key role in improving student outcomes, contributing to curriculum development, and creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment that supports all learners to achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons
* Develop and adapt learning materials to meet diverse learner needs
* Assess student work and provide constructive feedback
* Monitor and track student progress to support achievement and retention
* Maintain accurate academic and administrative records
* Act as a personal tutor, providing academic and pastoral support
* Contribute to curriculum development and quality improvement
* Use ILT and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning
* Participate in team meetings, CPD, and college events
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
* A degree or relevant qualification in English or a related subject
* Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one)
* Experience delivering Functional Skills or GCSE English
* Strong communication and organisational skills
* Ability to motivate and inspire learners of varying abilities
* Commitment to equality, diversity, and safeguarding
* Experience of teaching ESOL learners or the ability to adapt teaching, learning materials and delivery to support learners with English as an additional language
Desirable
* Experience working in a Further Education setting
* Knowledge of current Functional Skills curriculum and assessment
* Experience supporting learners with additional needs
Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding
To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

* DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
* Certificate in Education
* PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
* ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education)
* DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
* DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).
