Overview
Location: Glasgow
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract Type: Permanent / Full-time
We are recruiting for the organisation’s first dedicated Database Administrator. Since 2005, the company has relied on local SQL Servers without a specialist DBA function. With multiple business-critical databases underpinning payment portals, reporting, testing, and development environments, the organisation now requires an experienced DBA to take full ownership of database management, optimisation, and cloud migration. This is a key hire — you will set the standard for database best practices, implement indexing strategies, improve performance, and play a central role in migrating from on-premise SQL Server to Azure.
You’ll be working closely with a BA team of 3, a UAT team of 3, a Power BI team of 4–5, and a development team of 5 (including 1 senior, full-stack focus, not SQL experts).
Responsibilities
* Take ownership of SQL Server environments (4 databases on 1 production server, plus a test server and individual developer databases).
* Design and implement indexing plans (including re-indexing legacy databases).
* Review and optimise queries, indexes, and stored procedures.
* Manage replication and reporting servers.
* Oversee backups, restores, and disaster recovery planning.
* Lead the migration from on-prem SQL Server to Azure SQL.
* Ensure database security and compliance (GDPR, PCI DSS).
* Collaborate with developers, BI, and business teams to design efficient database solutions.
* Document database architecture, standards, and procedures.
Candidate Requirements
Essential Skills and Experience:
* Proven experience as a SQL Database Administrator.
* Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, and Azure SQL.
* Expertise in performance tuning, indexing, and query optimisation.
* Experience with high availability, replication, backup, and disaster recovery.
* Ability to assess and improve existing database structures and queries.
* Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
* Experience migrating SQL workloads to Azure.
* Exposure to other RDBMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
* Familiarity with scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
* Previous experience in financial services or regulated industries.
What’s on Offer
* Competitive salary and benefits package.
* The opportunity to be the organisation’s first dedicated DBA — shaping the function from the ground up.
* A role with direct impact on stability, performance, and innovation.
* Professional development and training opportunities.
* Hybrid or flexible working arrangements (where applicable).
