DRAFT TRANSCRIPT OF ~ VIDEO (next section has example graphics below-these need to be cleaned up And cohesive somehow)
There are four characters in the video : A long nosed gar fish, and a transparent crayfish. The gar and crayfish may be the size of horses and are being ridden by students .
1.G/C Greetings I am Connie crayfish and these are my friends Gregory Garr, Ava, and Luke.
We all live in Malletts Bay.. welllll,
Ava and Luke don't actually live IN the water like us, but they love it like we do, because they swim and fish and boat here.
And of course, we all think it's very, very beautiful
2.G/ But Connie and I don't feel very well.
3.Kids - Why? What do you think is wrong?
Can we help?
4.G/C Yes, you really can Let me explain. Over 100 years ago humans kind of plugged up Malletts Bay when they made the roads to the Sandbar and the causeway (where our bike path is now.) They didn't think it would hurt
5.Kids - Oh.. I get Malletts Bay got kind of plugged up?
That means that what happens in Malletts Bay stays in Malletts Bay ?
6.G/C You got it that includes gunky pollution that gets stuck here. We think pollution is making us sick
7.Kids - Yuck How can we make you feel better?
8.G/C Well, you need to learn some stuff
9.Kids- okay, if it will help you guys, we definitely wanna learn
10.G/C There is a very nasty kind of pollution called stormwater runoff, and most people, even grownups, don't know what it is.
11.Kids - Well, I sure don't know what it is. I've never heard of it.
12.C/G It's really bad stuff
And it makes up 90% of the pollution in Malletts Bay. Almost all the pollution in the Bay is from dirty stormwater runoff
13.Kids - Where does it come from?
14.G/C - It comes from all the gunk on the roads that washes down into the water. It makes the bay very dirty with nutrients, like phosphorus ([big word-needs graphic], salt and bad chemicals and stuff like that.
15.Kids - That's really bad for you guys, right?
16.G/C Yup, It's making us sick
17.Kids-Well, how do we stop it?
18.Greg - Humans know stormwater runoff causes most of the pollution in Malletts Bay cuz scientists did studies IN Colchester.
19.Connie - AND we know how to make it stop
20.C/G - People and fish need oxygen to live, and the area with no oxygen in the water for us fish to breathe, it is getting bigger and bigger every summer.
(Fish with X's over their eyes)…
21.Kids - we don't want you to die. We like you too much.
22.C/G - Did you guys notice the white arrows painted on the road? Those arrows point to where dirty stormwater runs right into our bay. On East and West Lakeshore Drive there are about 13 places where dirty stormwater goes right into the Bay
23.G/C Terry the Tern will show you from the air Get a birds-eye view
24.Kids - so wait a minute… we know stormwater runoff is very bad and we know where it's coming from?
25.G/C - we surely do
26.Kids- But, how do we stop it?
27.C/G – Tadaaa it's called green stormwater infrastructure
28.Kids - Say whaat?
29.C - It's just a big word for building things that will fix something the right way. We build things that act like the earth used to, so humans build wet ponds and dry wells and different kinds of places to soak up the gunk from the polluted water and let the clean part go..
30.G- sort of like when your mom cooks pasta and strains it..
31.Ava- Pasta is not gunky pollution stuff
32.Luke: For sure
33.G/C So, Mother Nature knows how to clean dirty water. She uses marshes and wetlands and infiltration to filter out the gunk before it goes into the Bay.
Sadly, humans did not think about that in time, there are some roads and buildings in places that should be soaking up gunk. And if we look, we can see all the places there are to fix [use graphics from stormwater bingo card for ideas]
34.G/C but now we have laws to stop that
35.G/C and we know how to fix this.
36.G/C Colchester even has over a million dollars every year to clean up dirty stormwater
37.G/C - Yay I hate it when our beaches close in the summertime and our dogs get sick if they drink the water that has cyanobacteria. [Big word-so needs photo labeled cyanobacteria]
and the animals get sick
38.G/C.. So now YOU know our water is dirty and we are getting sick and you can help us. YOU know pollution is caused by stormwater runoff and YOU know a little bit about what that is. And, YOU know a little bit about how it can be fixed. (Filter it, picture of earth and GSI)
Now YOU need to help other people - like grown ups – learn what is going on so they will want to help too
YOU can start by entering this contest and maybe winning $100 Even if you don't win, Colchester students get a free creemee or a pint of Fries from Al's French Fries just for trying
Go to for contest rules
Colchester students can help keep hundreds of millions of gallons of polluted stormwater from going into our bay every year so the water won't get worse.
Contract duration of less than 1 month.
