Job Summary

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to manage patient referrals along the MSK pathway, overseeing and performing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations and interventional procedures within this subspecialty. The latter will include joint injections, aspirations and other soft tissue interventions. You must also be able to evidence the four pillars of advanced practice (clinical, education, leadership and research) and demonstrate core capabilities and specialty specific clinical competence in MSK ultrasound.

Main duties of the job

The role is job planned to support clinical effectiveness with 80% Direct Clinical Contact time and 20% Supporting Professional Activities.

Prevalent Focus

* Supporting the delivery of MSK ultrasound training.
* Designing training, upskilling and preceptorship programmes and mentoring core trainers/supervisors.
* Developing and regularly reviewing departmental and Trust wide protocols and procedures.
* Undertaking and leading audits of clinical practice and service evaluation.
* Acting as an independent practitioner and expert advisor within the Imaging service for MSK ultrasound, contributing to service development, quality improvement and research initiatives.
* Supporting the strategic development and collaborative integration of MSK ultrasound across Barts Health and the North‑East London (NEL) Imaging Network by representing the service at hospital, Trust and NEL wide meetings.

Essential Experience

* Extensive experience in general ultrasound imaging post qualification.
* Experience scanning complex and acute cases from a broad range of referral pathways.
* Specialty expert in MSK ultrasound with extended scope of practice (incl. ultrasound‑guided injections).
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Post‑graduate teaching experience.
* Reviewing and updating clinical protocols and procedures in line with national standards.
* Lead audit and research ability, performing quality improvement projects.


Desirable Experience

* Undertaking appraisal practices.
* Attendance of a clinical supervisor course.
* Demonstrable operational management experience in the health service.
* Experience in undertaking recruitment drives.

Essential Qualifications

* BSc (Hons) Degree in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent.
* CASE accredited postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound (MSK Ultrasound and MSK Ultrasound‑Guided Injection Therapy modules).
* Leadership/managerial qualification or equivalent knowledge.


Desirable Qualifications

* MSc in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent.
* Project Management qualification.
* PG Cert in Education/Academic Practice.
* MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or e‑portfolio accreditation.
