Job Summary I am seeking dedicated female Personal Care Assistants to provide one-to-one personalised support in my own home. Although this role involves personal care and moving and handling, it is about much more than meeting my basic needs. It is about building a genuine, mutually respectful relationship and helping me to live independently, comfortably and with dignity. During the day you and I will work together completing tasks to help me to run my own household and do the things that matter to me. We might even have a laugh along the way! Overnight my carers make me comfortable in bed and then sleep in a separate room, on-call in case of emergency. There are various shifts available and I’m looking to build up a team of like-minded ladies who can work together and just with me, allowing me to live life to the full on my own terms. Shifts available are: Mornings: 0800-1330; Afternoons: 1630-2200; Overnights: 2100-1000 Full time and part time applications considered. A bit about me I live independently in my own home with the help of a team of carers. In 1999, I had a massive stroke which has left me paralysed and with poor speech but there is nothing wrong with my intellect! I only have a small amount of movement in my right hand. Otherwise, I am quadriplegic. I drive an electric wheelchair, and use a stand-aid for transferring from. I use assistive technology which allows me to control many things around my home with a single switch, and I operate my computer via a switch and an on-screen keyboard. Duties You will be supporting me with personal care, including showering, dressing and toileting, make-up and hair. I use a Stand-Aid for transferring between bed/wheelchair and shower chair. We will prepare my meals together and you will feed me and give me drinks throughout the day. You will help me take my medication and may need to give me a nebuliser as needed. I also have a cough assist machine which I use at least once a day. You will assist me with all activities of daily life throughout the day, including opening mail and reading it to me, making phone calls, writing or wrapping presents or parcels, unpacking groceries, doing laundry and whatever else needs doing that day. I have a wheelchair adapted vehicle which can be used to take me on outings or to appointments. Overnight shifts overlap with the morning and evening shifts to allow for two carers to work together for showering and getting up and the bedtime routine. Although it might be advantageous to have experience with catheter care, using a Stand-Aid or equipment like cough assist machines and nebulisers, it is not essential as on the job training will be given. My speech is difficult to understand, but with patience and practise it gets easier and I also have gadgets which can help us to communicate when it is tricky. It is expected that you will do your fair share of cover for your team-mates’ holiday and sickness. Requirements Common sense, good humour and a can-do attitude. Candidates must be utterly reliable and trustworthy. Having a (clean) driving licence is desirable but not essential. A certain amount of flexibility is required and there is an expectation that you will help to cover your share of your colleagues' holidays and sickness. If you are interested in applying, please contact me for a full job description and application form which I will send via email. I will then review your application and contact you to arrange an interview if appropriate. If you have questions, please contact me and I will reply via email.
