Travel required throughout Connecticut and potentially western Massachusetts (up to 75% travel).


Contract Details

* Position Type: Contract (Part-Time)
* Contract Duration: 8 months
* Start: As Soon As Possible
* Pay Rate: $25–$28/hour
* Hours: Approximately 32 hours/week
* Schedule: 3 days/week in the field, 1 day/week in the office
* Travel: Daily regional travel required; no fleet vehicle provided (limited access to 4WD pickup only)


Job Summary

The Assistant Environmental Monitoring Specialist will support a large electric transmission vegetation management project, providing environmental field compliance monitoring and construction oversight. This role is primarily field-based and requires strong familiarity with environmental permitting, erosion and sedimentation controls, and construction safety practices, particularly for overhead and underground transmission projects near wetlands and water bodies. The ideal candidate will bring recent environmental field experience, strong knowledge of Connecticut and New England environmental regulations, and the ability to work safely around active construction environments.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide ongoing environmental compliance monitoring of vegetation management and clearing activities
* Verify contractor adherence to environmental permits, approvals, and erosion & sedimentation BMPs
* Maintain working knowledge of all applicable Federal, State, and local environmental permits
* Utilize GIS and mapping tools in the field
* Communicate and reinforce compliance expectations with contractors and field personnel
* Complete daily field inspection reports, including photographic documentation
* Track and manage open environmental compliance punch-list items
* Review completed work with utility arborists and oversight staff
* Participate in pre-clearing walk-throughs prior to work initiation
* Deliver Threatened & Endangered (T&E) species training to contractors
* Participate in weekly project status calls as requested
* Reflag wetlands, T&E species locations, and cultural resource areas as needed
* Coordinate with resource‑specific monitors (e.g., T&E species biologists)
* Support office‑based tasks including documentation, correspondence, permit amendments, regulatory submissions, and data analysis


Required Qualifications

* Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field
* 2–5 years of experience in environmental compliance monitoring, surveys, or environmental studies
* Strong understanding of construction‑related environmental hazards and safety practices
* Ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions
* Ability to safely work around heavy construction equipment
* Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Excellent organizational skills and ability to work as part of a project team
* Willingness and ability to travel regularly


Preferred Qualifications

* CPESC® and/or CESSWI™ certification
* Experience with wetland and watercourse delineation, including vernal pools
* Familiarity with T&E species identification
* Working knowledge of Connecticut environmental permitting and compliance requirements


Additional Requirements

* Strong health and safety awareness
* Comfort working outdoors with exposure to uneven or saturated ground, insects, and seasonal weather conditions
* Ability to complete accurate documentation using project‑specific processes
