Role of the Nursing Associate
The Nursing Associate works with the multi-professional team and the Registered Nurse to assess, plan, organise, and deliver clinical care aligned with service and patient needs, as agreed with supervising clinicians. Responsibilities include administering nasogastric/gastrostomy feeds, medications, medical interventions such as suctioning and seizure management across our special schools.
The Nursing Associate provides an effective, evidence-based service to children and young people with additional needs, disabilities, long-term conditions, and life-limiting or life-threatening conditions in Walsall special schools. They possess broad knowledge across the lifespan and nursing fields, delivering holistic, person-centred care in various settings.
Working independently under the leadership of registered nurses, the Nursing Associate operates within the scope of nursing care and the nursing process (Health Education England 2018). They are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours, adhering to the NMC code of conduct and standards of proficiency.
Key Responsibilities
* Demonstrate proficiency in administering medications/feeds.
* Attend all mandatory training relevant to the role.
* Adhere to Trust policies on drug control and administration.
* Maintain high standards of nursing care and act when standards are not met.
* Work within the NMC code of practice, policies, procedures, and guidelines of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
* Be flexible to work across different areas to meet service needs.
* Provide coaching and support to newly qualified staff, students, and trainees, fostering an effective learning environment.
* Support and supervise healthcare support workers and assistant practitioners to promote their development.
* Accept delegated duties within their competency, following the NMC delegation and accountability framework.
* Recognise their limits of competence and take responsibility for ongoing professional development.
