The Main Purpose Of The Role

As a Clinical Psychologist, you'll play a key role in shaping the futures of young people by using evidence-based psychological approaches to support their emotional, cognitive, and behavioural development. Your work will directly contribute to preparing them for adulthood and independent living, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.

You will be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team (MDT) and will act as both a clinician and a mentor, supporting young people directly through tailored assessments and interventions, while also guiding non-clinical staff to respond to challenging behaviours and communication needs in ways that promote independence rather than reliance.

Your responsibilities will include conducting psychological assessments using structured interviews and psychometric tools, designing, and delivering both group and individual therapeutic interventions, and contributing to the development of staff training programmes. You'll also work closely with external professionals, supervise Assistant Psychologists, and have the opportunity to innovate and make a lasting impact in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Key Accountabilities

To provide a clinical psychology service to young people with complex needs, mainly associated with High Functioning Autism, anxiety, social and emotional or mental health conditions.

To provide advice, guidance and training to colleagues.

To liaise effectively with parents or carers, receiving and giving advice and information where necessary.

To develop and maintain individual student risk assessments, and provide advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.

To prepare, implement and monitor individual Positive Behaviour Support Plans for all students.

To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner.

To work closely with colleagues to maximise efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery.

To prepare assessments and reports for stakeholders.

Key Duties

To assess the psychological needs of young people through the most appropriate

strategy or approach for that person.

To liaise with external professionals involved in the care of young people.

To engage with a multi-disciplinary practice to co-ordinate behaviour support

provision so that it is effectively delivered to meet young peoples' needs.

To research best practice and lead on the implementation of the Positive Behaviour Support policy and practice.

To provide training and guidance to staff on such issues as behaviour support, mental health and communication.

To contribute to the training and support needs of families. Develop and deliver appropriate therapeutic group interventions.

Provide tailored individual interventions to young people when required.

Provide progress reports, treatment evaluations and risk assessments where appropriate for Multi-disciplinary and High Priority Group meetings.

Post holders are expected to undertake any other reasonably duties, for which they are trained, qualified or competent.

Education and training

Post graduate qualification in Psychology.

Registered and accredited with Health & Care Profession Council (HCPC) as a

Practitioner Psychologist.

Experience

Working with young people with special education needs and high level of support.

Working with young people with Autism and associated difficulties.

Working in a school, college or care setting is desirable.

Working within a multi-disciplinary team.

Current evidence-based practice.

Skills, Knowledge And Ability

Good level of spoken and written English.

Ability to supervise, train and teach staff.

Basic ICT skills.

Demonstrate knowledge and ability to promote the dignity and individuality of

young people by encouraging effective communication, making choices and

reducing support needs.

Ability to prioritise.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to keep accurate records.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Knowledge of safeguarding legislation.

Good attendance record; punctual and reliable.

Develop positive professional relationships with young people, parents, families

and colleagues.

Promote attitudes that value young people with Special Educational Needs as

individuals with a right to be treated with respect.
