Senior Ornithologist

£38,000–£42,000 + 20 days CPD, Hybrid Working, Flexible working (i.e. 4 day week, 9 day fortnight)
Our client is an independent environmental consultancy with around 30 experienced passionate environmentalists based across the Central Belt of Scotland.
As a business, they are committed to delivering practical, science‑led solutions that genuinely support responsible development - never just box‑ticking.
As their ecology team continues to grow, they’re looking for a Senior Ornithologist to lead survey programmes, mentor junior colleagues, and contribute to high‑profile projects across the UK. This role offers a mix of field and desk based work however, this is flexible and project dependent.
About the Role
You will lead Ornithological assessments for planning and development projects across Renewables, Utilities and Residential sectors, with opportunities to influence both project design and strategic decision‑making.
Responsibilities include:
* Designing, coordinating, and delivering a range of ornithological surveys
* Preparing technical reports, HRA/AA documentation, and EcIA chapters
* Engaging with statutory bodies and key stakeholders
* Supporting tenders and contributing to client proposals
* Mentoring junior ecologists and supporting team development
What You’ll Bring
* 5+ years’ ecological consultancy experience with a strong focus on ornithology
* Excellent bird ID skills and experience across survey types (breeding bird, vantage point, wintering bird, etc.)
* Schedule 1 survey experience, with a solid understanding of licensing requirements
* Demonstrable experience producing high‑quality technical reports, including ornithological assessments for EIAs and HRAs
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork
