Job Description
Alpine Formula One Team is seeking an experienced, skilled, and motivated Wind Tunnel Control Systems Team Leader to join our Experimental Aerodynamics Department. Based at our state‑of‑the‑art wind tunnel facility in the Oxfordshire countryside, this is a rare opportunity to be part of our exceptional control systems group developing our experimental aerodynamics capabilities.
If you are a hands‑on engineer with a strong controls background, a passion for problem‑solving, and the ability to lead a team in a fast‑paced and innovative environment, this role could be your next step in motorsport.
The Role
As Wind Tunnel Control Systems Team Leader, you will take ownership of the control systems that underpin our wind tunnel facility, test rigs, and supporting technologies. You will lead a team of Control Systems Engineers, ensuring the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of this critical infrastructure.
Working closely with design, electrical, software, aerodynamic, and wind tunnel engineers, you will ensure that our testing environment is robust, efficient, and capable of delivering the highest‑quality data. You’ll also drive forward new tools, control strategies, and simulation capabilities that support innovation across the department.
This is a leadership‑focused, highly technical role that blends software, control systems engineering, operational support, and team development.
The Person
To succeed in this role, you will need a strong background in electrical or control systems engineering, with proven experience in complex test facility or industrial automation environments. You’ll be comfortable balancing hands‑on engineering with leadership responsibilities, capable of diagnosing and resolving issues quickly while also driving strategic improvements to systems and processes. You will be an effective communicator, a natural collaborator, and someone who takes pride in delivering reliable, high quality work. A passion for continuous improvement, attention to detail, and a proactive mindset are essential.
Key Skills & Experience
* A Master’s degree (or higher) in Electrical, Control, Systems or Mechatronics Engineering or an equivalent discipline with a significant controls and systems component
* Experience with wind tunnel facility or advanced test rig systems, including design, development and use
* Experience of industrial automation including mechanical and hydraulic systems
* Experience with some of the following technologies: Cosworth Diablo, Beckhoff TwinCAT, PLC programming, embedded development (C, C++), application development (.NET, C#, Python), and MathWorks tools (MATLAB, Simulink/Embedded Coder, Stateflow, Simscape)
* Experience in modelling, simulation, and control theory
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills
* Strong organisational, project management, and presentation abilities
* A willingness to take a hands‑on role in the wind tunnel environment
* A diligent, proactive attitude with exceptional attention to detail
* Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor engineers, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement
Working Pattern
This is a factory‑based role at our Enstone Technical Centre in the Oxfordshire countryside. Standard working hours are 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday. A flexible attitude to working hours is required, with the expectation that you will work as necessary to meet the demands of the role. Occasional weekend work and travel will also be required.
