Principal Engineer

The Role of the Principal Engineer:
They are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to take on a leadership role in product design and development, ensuring technical and legislative compliance. This is a pivotal position where you will lead the creation of complex enclosures and consoles for ships, submarines, and aerospace applications, from concept through to manufacturing. You will work closely with their senior technical team, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting business growth through innovative design solutions.
Responsibilities of the Principal Engineer:
Lead the technical design of new equipment to meet customer specifications, managing the entire product lifecycle, including requirements, compliance, development, drawings, and reports.
Collaborate with electrical engineers, manufacturing teams, and suppliers to ensure designs are viable, manufacturable, and compliant with all statutory and defence standards.
Conduct internal and external design reviews, including PDR, CDR, and PRR stages, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
Support bid responses, cost estimating, and technical justification for proposals.
Mentor and motivate engineering team members, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Engage with customers at all levels, translating complex requirements into clear, compliant design solutions and presenting technical solutions confidently.
Requirements of the Principal Engineer:
Extensive mechanical design experience, ideally within defence, naval, aerospace, or similar.
Proven track record in design from concept to production, with at least 5 years in a similar role.
Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, manufacturing processes, mechanical analysis (stress, CFD, FEA), and electromechanical work.
Bachelors degree in mechanical design or a related field, or equivalent experience (minimum 5 years).
Proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
Experience working within regulatory frameworks such as DEF STAN standards and international compliance requirements.
