Band 7 Children's Occupational Therapist and EHC Lead

Full‑time hours 37.5 per week

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist to join our Children’s Occupational Therapy team.

The Children’s Occupational Therapist and EHC Lead will work as part of a team that provides a high standard occupational therapy service to children up to 18 years of age with difficulties in play, self‑care and/or school occupations due to a variety of conditions.

The post holder will be the OT Lead for Education and Health Care (EHC) assessments, with responsibility for completing assessments, providing reports and attending EHC panels along with oversight and quality assurance of EHC assessment provision across the service.

The post holder will develop, plan and provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessments, interventions and advice for children with functional difficulties, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, wider CYP service, school staff and families/carers. The postholder will work autonomously, seeing children in a variety of community healthcare and educational settings, including clients’ homes, clinics, schools and nurseries.

The Children’s Occupational Therapist and EHC Lead will line manage a small team, including recruitment and retention, and deliver specialist training and advice to multi‑disciplinary colleagues and students.

Main duties of the job

Provide Education, Health and Care plan (EHC) assessments, reports and reviews, and oversee and quality assure the EHC assessment provision within the service, including reports and assessments by other team members; in all cases ensure adherence to local, national and professional guidelines and practice.

Exercise specialist understanding in complex cases, supporting multi‑disciplinary colleagues and working closely with the SEN Team. This will include offering specialist testimony regarding OT provision e.g. at panels, appeals and tribunals.

Maintain a specialist knowledge of the EHC process and associated legislation, keeping up to date with SEND local offers, developments and good practice; share and disseminate learning and promote quality improvement.

Manage a complex clinical caseload, using evidence‑based practice and client‑centred care, undertaking assessment, interpretation of assessment results, evaluation, meaningful goals, treatment, and advice.

Carry out assessments and evaluate the child’s occupational performance, for example, through the use of standardised and non‑standardised assessments, observation, interview with parent or carer and/or parent and teacher questionnaires.

Qualifications

* Educated to diploma or degree level in Occupational Therapy or equivalent training/study


Professional Registration

* HCPC registration


Training

* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development, including post registration training/qualifications in relevant specialist areas e.g. sensory integration levels 1 and 2, CO-OP approach, neurodevelopment and complex needs
* Post registration training/qualification in leadership and management, or equivalent experience.
* Comprehensive training in assessment and treatment of children with complex functional needs
* Up to date Moving & Handling training.
* Field Work Educator Course, or equivalent training/experience.
* Training specific to EHC process, including report writing and giving evidence at tribunals/hearings


Specific Skills

* Ability to autonomously manage a complex caseload within a community paediatric setting.
* Significant, current and relevant clinical skills – either developed in children’s OT or transferable – demonstrating evidence informed practice with an occupation‑based focus.
* Excellent working knowledge of child development and varying conditions and the implication for Occupational Therapy.
* Ability to assess the need for, prescribe/recommend and advise on the use of specialist equipment.
* Ability to assess and analyse a child’s functional abilities using standardised and non‑standardised methods, in line with best practice.
* Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to empower others in practice and a sound understanding of accountability, delegation and escalation in a clinical setting.
* Excellent written communication skills, including: • detailed reports and contemporaneous note taking • the ability to record and convey actions, decisions, recommendations, etc, accurately, succinctly and within timelines


Experience

* Significant post registration experience within paediatrics
* Experience of working in a community setting.
* Experience of complex caseload management.
* interventions - including moving and handling and specialist equipment use - for children with a range of difficulties e.g. physical disabilities, multiple and complex conditions, displaying, challenging behaviour, coordination or sensory processing difficulties
* Significant experience in the assessment and provision of EHC reports.
* Excellent understanding of the SEND Code of Practice, EHC plans and related legislation.
* Established knowledge of national policies, procedures and legislation relevant to Children’s OT, including safeguarding.
* Experience of leadership and management, including appraisal and performance/absence management.
* Experience of attending EHC panels.
* Experience in providing specialist OT school provision
* Experience of leading policy and/or service development


Information Technology and Information Governance

* Solid IT skills, including use of mobile phone, laptop etc and programmes for service delivery and line management e.g. Microsoft office, internet, email
* Knowledge and experience of using electronic patient/clinical systems, including ordering clinical equipment.
* Experience of electronic diaries and/or rosters
* Experience of using EMIS
* Experience of using eRoster
