About the role
We are seeking an experienced Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) to join our maternity team at the Rosie.
This key leadership and support role focuses on enhancing the quality of care, supporting midwives, and promoting a positive working environment through the A‑EQUIP model (Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement).
Key Responsibilities
* Provide restorative clinical supervision to midwives and maternity staff
* Support continuous professional development and reflective practice
* Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives within maternity services
* Promote safe, evidence‑based practice and a culture of learning
* Offer guidance and support in complex clinical and professional situations
* Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for women and families
About You
* Registered Midwife with current professional registration
* Qualified Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
* Significant post‑registration experience in midwifery practice
* Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills
* Passionate about staff well‑being, development, and high‑quality patient care
* Ability to facilitate reflective discussions and support practice improvement
Qualifications
* Registered midwife
* Qualified PMA
* Educated to BSc level or equivalent
* Qualified sign‑off mentor and has undertaken mentorship training
* ECDL or equivalent experience
* Evidence of CPD
* Management skills including chairing meetings, presentations, report writing, managing change, performance management
* Thorough understanding of the NMC Code (2015)
* Appreciation of strategic issues affecting health and health care provision
* Knowledge of clinical governance and its implementation
* Experience as Supervisor of Midwives
* Educated to MSc level
Experience
* Broad knowledge of midwifery practice and supervision of midwives
* Well‑developed leadership skills
* Professional credibility with senior colleagues and midwives
* Proven track record in a leadership role
* Negotiation, networking and communication skills
* Team working experience and demonstration of effective team working principles
* Ability to work autonomously, planning and organising own diary
* Experience working with a wide range of disparate individuals
* Experience as a PMA lead or working as a PMA
* Experience with quality improvement methodology
* Band 7 midwife experience
Knowledge
* Ability to gather, analyse, interpret and disseminate in‑depth information
* Knowledge of confidentiality issues and appropriate handling of sensitive personal, patient and corporate information
Skills
* Working in a complex environment and coping with competing priorities
* Managing own diary via Microsoft Outlook, organising and managing meetings as a PMA
* IT skills using applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel
* Excellent report‑writing skills
