The Product Development & Test Engineer will contribute to the design, development, and validation of cable management and power products. This role involves overseeing design, test, and conformity processes to ensure accurate, compliant, and cost-effective components and products. The position requires strong collaboration with Quality, Production, Industrialisation, and Marketing teams, as well as external toolmakers and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out value engineering and update existing designs.
* Research, design, develop, and validate new products.
* Specify and develop next-generation power and cable management products that meet market requirements and comply with national and international standards.
* Produce and maintain technical files to meet UK regulations and EU directives.
* Follow design and development procedures in line with ISO9001 and eco-design policies.
* Manage type testing, test reporting, and facility safety in compliance with ISO 17025.
* Liaise with Industrialisation to produce practical, cost-effective designs.
* Provide Purchasing with technical details for supplier parts.
* Support Marketing with the technical content of catalogues and manuals.
* Offer technical expertise to the wider team on electrical and mechanical product matters.
* Use 2D and 3D CAD (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks) to develop designs.
Skills & Competencies
* Knowledge of UK Wiring Regulations and relevant international standards.
* Understanding of power distribution and cable management products.
* Ability to plan and manage product development projects and type test programmes.
* Competence in CAD systems including AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, with 3D and sheet metal modelling.
* Strong IT skills (spreadsheets, databases, presentation tools).
* Excellent communication skills across all levels, internal and external.
* Ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams, as well as independently.
* Willingness to travel within and outside the UK.
* Familiarity with ISO 17025 test facilities (desirable).
* Knowledge of plastic injection mouldings, die-casting, and sheet metal modelling (preferred).
* Basic knowledge of engineering materials (metals, polymers), mechanical simulation (Inventor, Ansys), and type testing (temperature rise, mechanical loading, glow-wire testing, etc.).
* Understanding of electrical panel layouts and wiring schematics, with working knowledge of single- and three-phase systems.
Education & Qualifications
* Degree or HND in Electrical, Mechanical, Product Design, or a related engineering discipline.
* Membership of a professional engineering institution (e.g., IET, IMechE) is desirable.
