Assistant Technical Officer (Blood Transfusion)

Applications are invited to join the team of Assistant Technical Officers (ATO) in the busy Blood Bank Department of Combined Labs at University Hospitals Plymouth. The post will be based in the Blood Bank Department in Derriford Hospital. ATO staff assist the Biomedical Scientists in the examination of a wide range of clinical samples from patients in order to determine the laboratory diagnosis and appropriate treatment. ATOs additionally carry out other support duties essential for the smooth running of the Department. The role is interesting, varied, and full training and supervision is provided.


Responsibilities

* Book in Group and Save Blood samples and other product requests.
* Use analysers, centrifuges and equipment to test samples according to standard national methods.
* Regularly monitor fridge temperatures.
* Drive the on‑site Blood Bank vehicle to various hospital establishments in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.
* Assist Biomedical Scientists in examining clinical samples to determine laboratory diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
* Carry out other support duties essential for the smooth running of the Department.
* Perform basic maintenance checks on equipment as directed.
* Ensure senior staff are notified when stock levels are low.
* Plan and prioritise own work under supervision and be aware of service requirements.
* Ensure work is carried out efficiently, accurately and in accordance with departmental procedures.
* Identify, prepare, uncapping and loading samples onto analysers.
* Unload, rerun if required, recap, rack away for storage.
* Verify samples match work lists, patient ID is correct, and there is sufficient sample.
* Report rejected samples to senior BMS.
* Enter test results into the Pathology computer system for authorisation.
* Attach bar‑code labels, centrifuge, separate and prepare aliquots as required.


Key Working Relationships

The post holder works closely with the Section Leader, Senior BMS, scientific staff and support staff in the section.


Candidate Profile

Ideally works well in a team, can manage urgent deadlines, has good communication skills and attention to detail.


Job Requirements

* Full clean driving licence with 2 years of driving experience.
* Will be required to work regular nightshifts and weekends at an enhanced pay rate.


Person Specification


Knowledge & Experience

* Understanding of patient confidentiality.
* Knowledge of blood and blood products.
* Use of IT equipment including keyboard.
* Knowledge of all assays performed and sent away by the department.
* Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation and its application.


Qualifications

* GCSE 9-4 (A-C) in Maths & English.
* NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration or related subject (or equivalent experience).
* Proven driving experience.


Aptitude & Abilities

* Excellent communication skills with staff and patients.
* Ability to prioritise work.
* Good interpersonal skills.
