Design Manager / Responsible Engineer

About the Role
We are working with a leading international engineering and construction company delivering complex infrastructure projects across sectors such as energy, transport, and civil engineering. Known for its focus on technical excellence, safety, and innovation, it operates across global markets on large-scale, multidisciplinary projects. The Design Manager will manage design and engineering activities, ensuring deliverables are completed in line with agreed scope, programme, and budget. The role ensures that health, safety, environmental, and quality considerations are embedded throughout all design stages, with clear communication to construction and operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead and manage all design and engineering processes across projects
2. Ensure delivery of design outputs on time and within budget
3. Develop and manage the design deliverables schedule
4. Oversee design reviews, stage gates, and risk reduction processes
5. Provide technical support to project teams
6. Ensure compliance with project procedures and engineering standards
7. Manage design queries (TQ/RFI/NCR) and ensure timely resolution
8. Coordinate design planning with construction programmes
9. Act as primary point of contact for client design representatives
10. Produce regular design progress and project reports
11. Ensure quality assurance and document control compliance
12. Chair design and interface meetings with internal and external stakeholders
13. Review designs for contractual compliance and approval requirements
14. Manage external designers, suppliers, and subcontractors
15. Oversee BIM and digital delivery requirements
16. Manage design change processes and associated risks
17. Support commercial management of design activities
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
18. Degree in a relevant engineering discipline
19. Minimum 3 years’ experience in civil engineering or similar projects
20. Experience in both design and construction environments
21. Strong understanding of construction methods and outputs
22. Knowledge of engineering processes, standards, and compliance requirements
23. Competent in Microsoft Office and industry software
Desirable
24. Professional accreditation (e.g. Incorporated Engineer or equivalent)
25. Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
26. Knowledge of project delivery frameworks and industry initiatives
27. Experience with digital tools such as Power BI
