You'll be lucky enough to be based at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ulverston, Cumbria, on the edge of the beautiful Lake District National Park or Site Independent. Site Independent is working from home with 1 week per month working on-site in Ulverston which is fully expensed. The role:
The Embedded Software Engineer / Embedded C/C++ Engineer will play a key role within their multi-disciplinary small design team, which specialises in acoustics, imaging, vision, mechanical design, electronic hardware design, embedded software design and application software development.
The Embedded Software Engineer will be responsible for developing low-level software for sonar, acoustics, and sensor systems. The role involves bootloader and driver development, real-time signal processing, and embedded Linux configuration (Yocto, PetaLinux) on ARM based platforms. Within this role, you'll be responsible for all stages of development, from design to test and deployment.
Embedded Software Engineer Job responsibilities:
* Develop and optimize low-level drivers and firmware for acoustic sensors and sonar systems
* Configure and customise Yocto and PetaLinux for real-time embedded applications
* Implement secure boot mechanisms, OTA updates, and firmware authentication
* Work with real-time processing algorithms for sonar and acoustic signal acquisition
* Develop embedded software in C, C++, and Python, ensuring efficient hardware utilization
* Writing test benches for simulation / testing
* Achieving timing closure
* Keeping the design team up to speed with the latest embedded development advancements.
Qualifications and experience:
* The successful candidate will possess a degree level MEng qualification within a relevant subject (ideally Electronics or Electrical Engineering), however applicants with qualifications within other relevant disciplines will also be considered
* 3+ years of experience in embedded software development, particularly in acoustics, sonar, or sensor-based systems
* Strong background in ARM-based processors and low-level programming
* Proficiency in C, C++, and Python for embedded applications
* Hands-on expertise with real-time constraints, RTOS, and signal processing algorithms
* Experience with secure boot, system security, and firmware updates
* Familiarity with Linux kernel development, Linux architecture, Yocto, and PetaLinux.
