You will be responsible for providing financial advice, direction, and support to both financial and non-financial senior managers, and their management teams and you will act as a ‘challenging sparring partner’ balancing effective business partner support with appropriate challenge, delivering strong performance management against agreed targets for your function, working to strict and challenging deadlines.
You will work with a variety of enthusiastic and motivated multidisciplinary teams across the UK who are united in our core purpose of saving and improving patients’ lives and knowing that you have contributed to this will be one of your greatest rewards. You will continuously review your engagement within existing frameworks, processes, and systems, seeking to identify more effective and efficient systems for the management of the organisation’s financial resources.
Critical to this role will be the ability to demonstrate business acumen in pursuit of strategic objectives, delivered in a challenging environment.
Note: This is a national role, requiring travel across England based on business needs. The role offers a hybrid working option. You will be assigned a base location, which could be one of the NHSBT main centres or blood centres. The exact location will be confirmed after the final interview and mutually agreed upon with the line manager during the verbal offer stage.
Main duties of the job
In this role you will be to providing financial planning support to the senior management of a specific function / sub-function within NHSBT. Your responsibilities will include:
* Supporting the following key business processes: Budget Build, Financial Reporting/Forecasting, ABC/M Costing and Projects Financial Management.
* Acting as a ‘challenging sparring partner’ balancing effective business partner support with appropriate challenge, delivering strong performance management against agreed targets for the function / sub-function.
* Providing advice, direction, and support to senior managers / management teams within NHSBT on financial matters.
* Demonstrating business acumen in pursuit of the function / sub-function(s) strategic objectives, in a challenging environment.
* Reporting on financial performance advising on progress against plans, identifying the reasons for variations against plan and recommending remedial action(s) where necessary.
* Providing financial input and general support / advice to the development of business cases / investment appraisal decisions, as well as the accurate tracking of (multiple) project delivery costs and financial benefits, attending project team meetings as appropriate.
You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
* Significant experience of financial management within a large, multi-disciplined organisation
* Experience of supporting the development of business cases utilising investment appraisal techniques and of project accounting support
* Advanced user of recognised business software packages
* Experience of using an integrated financial / general ledger system and of working with costing software tools
* Knowledge and understanding of the general NHS environment and NHS finance policies
* Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint and other recognised business software packages
Qualifications and Training
* Qualified Accountant with post-qualification experience. In exceptional circumstances qualification by relevant experience is acceptable
* Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)

This role will follow a two-stage selection process. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 6 January 2026 and invited to the first stage, which is a video presentation.
