Job Title: Board Member (Trustee) Job role: To enter into an engaged and proactive relationship with Reall, providing strategic oversight and leadership across the housing, finance, and emerging markets sectors to drive the achievement of our ambitious goal. Key Responsibilities To own and protect the mission and values of Reall, ensuring that appropriate policies and monitoring are in place to demonstrate this. To act as an ambassador for Reall, especially with external stakeholders. To be one of the guarantors of probity across the activities of Reall to protect its long-term viability. To participate in giving or withholding consent to new policies, changes in policies and operating decisions. Contribute actively in setting the strategic direction for Reall, reviewing overall policy in light of changing circumstances, defining goals and setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets. To ensure that in all its activities, Reall: Complies with its Memorandum and Articles of Association, charity law, company law, and all relevant legislation or regulations; Pursues its objects as defined in its Articles of Association; Uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects and does not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are. Uphold Reall’s responsibilities for vigilance over safeguarding, modern slavery and fraud in all dealings with stakeholders both inside and outside of the organisation. When travelling on behalf of Reall, to act as our eyes and ears in reporting any potential problems and helping affected individuals to understand their rights to protection. Draw on your identified sector-specific skills and experience and networks to accelerate the delivery of Reall’s vision, providing advice and facilitating connections to wider sector actors. Contribute to committee and ad-hoc working groups as required. Protect and manage the assets of Reall and ensure the proper investment and management of its funds and property in order to mitigate losses in line with Reall’s agreed risk management approach. To ensure that Reall has an effective risk management strategy and policy in place, which is regularly reviewed and to regularly review risks across all areas of the business, to ensure that risk is managed in line with Reall’s published agreed risk appetite. To attend induction, training and performance review sessions and other such events that are as are reasonably required by Reall. Appoint the Chief Executive Officer, monitor his/her performance and support him/her in that role. Compliance Comply with the policies and procedures as set out in Reall’s Staff Handbook and all relevant procedures and processes. Adhere to all relevant Data Protection legislation. At all times to work in a manner that ensures the health and safety of the post-holder, other staff, colleagues and visitors to Reall’s premises. Other requirements The role is likely to include occasional overseas travel in representing Reall’s interests and in building an understanding of its operating environment with partner organisations. This role will require travel to Reall's office in Coventry, and occasionally to other UK venues for meetings and events. Virtual attendance is also often possible. Person Specification Experience: You will be an individual of exceptional calibre and will bring a track record of leadership in emerging economies, and a commitment to international development, affordable housing, and social enterprise. You will have relevant international development experience within African and/or Asian markets. You will bring strategic vision, excellent communication skills, and an understanding of robust governance. Most importantly, you will demonstrate a commitment to the mission and values of Reall. Essential A minimum of three years’ relevant experience as a board member or trustee in a not-for profit organisation or social enterprise. UK-based senior academic who can significantly enhance our credibility in data and evidence initiatives as well as our broader portfolio. Experience working in the context of African and/or Asian markets. An understanding of and commitment to international development and social enterprise. An understanding of the requirements of good governance in a not-for-profit organisation such as Reall. An understanding of risk management principles and their applications in managing a business. An understanding of good HR and/or organisational development practice. An effective communicator to inspire people to engage with Reall’s work. An understanding of the impact of diversity and inclusion on corporate performance. A commitment to giving the necessary time and effort to engage effectively with the work of Reall. Desirable Expertise in climate, gender, or financial inclusion Expertise in leading quality academic research Financial governance, including knowledge of charity finance and/or NGO and similar funding streams. Strategic planning. Advocacy, marketing and communications. Governance processes and best practice. Expertise, experience, and linkages related to organisational development in developing countries. Raising funding from the impact and development finance sector and related/similar networks. Investment and loan book management, especially in the context of developing countries. Investment appraisal, principally in relation to construction projects. Construction and project management. Urban and real estate planning in developing countries Time Commitment You will be expected to commit a minimum of 5-6 days a year. Board meetings are usually held at Reall’s Head Office in Coventry, UK or via video conference. These roles are on a voluntary basis and are unremunerated, however, appropriate expenses will be reimbursed.
