Job overview

The Acute Oncology Band 7 Team Lead works as an autonomous practitioner within a team structure across all clinical areas at Hampshire Hospitals. The post holder will help to lead the Acute Oncology team and support the wider cancer services team in the delivery of our service, this includes:

1. High standards of professional practice to ensure quality and safety of patient care, experience and the patient journey.
2. Acting as a positive role model.
3. Supporting the team in ensuring that clinical services are delivered to a high quality of care and that all compliance requirements such as CQC and contractual requirements are achieved.
4. Providing timely and appropriate advice and care to patients experiencing a complication of their cancer diagnosis or treatment.
5. Being able to triage emergency phone calls and assess urgent patient reviews.
6. To have the skills to assess patients, formulate a diagnostic treatment plan and to prescribe medications appropriately.
7. Line manager responsibility for a small team of Clinical Nurse Specialists.

The Acute Oncology team is a swiftly developing specialty in which all cancer patients treated at Hampshire Hospitals are offered access to specialist nursing advice 24 hours a day. The Band 7 role offers the candidate the opportunity to undertake employment in an exciting and constantly developing specialty and to develop their leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist in Acute Oncology you will help to lead the Acute Oncology team and be responsible for:

·To be responsible for contributing to the creation and maintenance of a clinical environment in which care and compassion is consistently demonstrated, ensuring patient centred care, privacy and dignity is practiced at all times.

·To support the team to ensure the maintenance of a high quality five day a week service.

·To support the Band 8 Acute Oncology Lead Nurse.

·To be willing to work clinically on either site according to need or requirement.

·To support the team in maintaining a broad, clinical skill set within the team to ensure high quality and compassionate care for all patients presenting to the clinical area

· To assist in the delivery of appropriate aspects of the Trust wide clinical skills training, working collaboratively with clinical specialist colleagues and supported by the Education team.

·To undertake regular audits to contribute towards service development.

·Provide clinical advice within the Trust regarding the area of clinicalspecialism.

·To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skills.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

8. Professional UK registration e.g. NMC.
9. 3 years post registration experience.
10. Computer Literate.
11. Able to demonstrate a good command of the English Language both written and verbal.

Desirable criteria

12. 2 years experience in oncology and/or haematology

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

13. Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD) clearly recorded for professional profile.
14. Knowledge and experience of a range of approaches to the management of patients utilising clinical reasoning
15. Multidisciplinary team working.

Desirable criteria

16. Experience of patient triage.
17. Experience of working within an acute medical setting.
18. Awareness of local and national agenda within the specialty.

19. Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner
20. Good communication skills to communicate complex, sensitive or confidential information in an appropriate manner.
21. Show evidence of being self-motivated and the ability to motivate others.
22. Be able to demonstrate initiative.

24. Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate
25. Ability to work with the multi/interdisciplinary team and set goals
26. Ability to cope with working in a stressful and unpredictable environment.
