Overview
Senior Healthcare Support Worker (SHCSW) position in North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) Centralised Outpatients Department. The department handles multiple clinics weekly across Gate 5, Gate 12, Gate 24, Gate 36 and Cossham Hospital. The role involves direct patient care under supervision, support for registered practitioners, and opportunities for skill development and care certificate attainment. The post requires flexibility to cover various shifts and occasional clinics at off-site facilities in Cossham, Yate, Thornbury, and South Bristol.

Main duties
A Senior Healthcare Support Worker is a core team member delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners to provide high-quality, compassionate care in accordance with assessed needs and care plans. You will perform a range of clinical and non-clinical tasks under supervision, in line with Trust values. Training will be provided to ensure core skills are met, and support may be available to obtain the Care Certificate if not already held.
Key activities include:
* Carry out a range of clinical duties with minimal to no supervision (e.g., blood pressure monitoring, oxygen saturation, temperature, pulse, respiration, glucose monitoring, specimen collection and processing, wound swabs). The list is not exhaustive and will vary by area.
* Participate in patient assessment and provide holistic care, escalating concerns as needed.
* Adhere to infection prevention, health and safety policies, and maintain a safe, tidy work environment.
* Maintain accurate records and effective communication with patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team.
* Maintain equipment and supplies; escalate faults as appropriate.
* Work effectively as part of a team and support self-care and independence for patients; provide health education relevant to the clinical area.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential:
* One of the following: Level 3 RQF/SCQF, City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma, or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months)
* GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or equivalent
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (maps to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker) or equivalent experience
Desirable:
* Completion of venepuncture and physiological measurements competencies
Knowledge & Experience
Essential:
* At least 12 months’ experience in health or social care
* Experience as a support worker and ability to work as part of a team
* Good time management and prioritisation
* Caring approach to patients and relatives
Desirable:
* Experience in an acute hospital setting
Skills & Abilities
Essential:
* Effective written and verbal communication
* Accurate documentation
* Basic IT skills (word processing, email)
* Awareness of healthcare policies and procedures
* Ability to work with minimal supervision to a high standard
