Description Job description Do you want to make a meaningful impact on education policy and practice? The Registrar of Independent Schools is an official of the Scottish Government, based in Education Scotland, however this role will move from Education Scotland to the Scottish Government, aligning with the Education Reform programme and Professor Ken Muir’s recommendations. You will be responsible for the maintenance of the public register of independent schools. You will provide advice to the Scottish Ministers in relation to the independent schools’ sector (circa ninety schools and twenty-eight thousand children and young people). This includes making recommendations to Ministers as to whether they should take regulatory action in order to address weaknesses identified by HM Inspectors or in response to concerns or complaints raised by members of the public. Responsibilities Manage the registration and regulation of independent schools, including applications, changes to provision/premises, maximum pupil rolls, and maintaining the register. Process complaints, concerns, and other intelligence to assess risks and determine whether further action is required. Provide reliable, timely, and legally robust advice and briefing to Ministers, including for FMQs, official engagements, and urgent events or incidents. Respond to MACCS cases, Parliamentary Questions, and general enquiries relating to independent schools. Work closely with HM Inspectors and the Care Inspectorate to inform advice and actions, particularly where weaknesses are identified. Engage with a broad range of stakeholders (e.g. SCIS, Police Scotland, Disclosure Scotland, Local Authorities) to support safety, quality, and compliance in the independent schools sector. Contribute to policy development and consultation related to the independent sector, including improvements to the registration process. Lead the preparation and collection of the independent school census in partnership with ScotXed and schools.
