Hands and Plastic Injury Specialist Nurse

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen within the Plastics Trauma Service for a Specialist Nurse based in theHands and Plastic Injury (HAPI) Clinic. The HAPI Clinic is an urgent care facility at the John Radcliffe Hospital, providing specialist Plastic Surgery assessment, treatment, including minor operations, and ambulatory care to patients across Oxfordshire. HAPI Clinic operates daily from 07:30 to 18:00, including weekends and bank holidays, with the Ambulatory Care service provided until 20:00 each day.

As a Specialist Nurse in the HAPI Clinic, you will be responsible for coordinating the care of patients referred to the emergency Plastic Surgery service and oversee the day-to-day running of the clinic. You will assess and provide specialist care to patients with acute hand and soft tissue injuries, including burns, and assist with minor operations in our designated procedure suite. In addition, the post holder will act as the key point of contact within the Hands and Plastic Trauma Service, actively coordinating care.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and flexible individual with a genuine interest in Plastic Surgery and urgent care. The role requires strong problem-solving skills and initiative to ensure high standards of care. Further specialist training and professional development opportunities will be provided as part of the role.


Main duties of the job

* Coordinate and supervise the daily running of the Hands and Plastics Injuries (HAPI) Clinic, which includes the ambulatory care service and minor operations (HAPI MOPS).
* Work at an enhanced level as a Specialist Nurse in Plastic Surgery, undertaking comprehensive assessments and delivering specialist care to patients with hand and soft tissue injuries, including children.
* Act as a role model and key point of contact within the Plastic Surgery Trauma Service, consistently promoting the Trust values.
* Coordinate and manage referrals to the Plastic Trauma Service in close collaboration with the on-call Plastic Surgery team

Job responsibilities

* Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients and their families/carers attending the HAPI Clinic and Ambulatory Care Service. This includes the provision of care to children and young adults.
* Undertake daily clinical reviews of Plastic Surgery patients, delivering specialist wound care and treatments in collaboration with the Hands and Plastic Surgery team.
* Coordinate and provide ambulatory care within the HAPI service, including venepuncture, cannulation and patient assessment.
* Assist the Plastic Surgery team with minor surgical procedures in HAPI, including the preparation of surgical equipment, intraoperative assistance, documentation and delivery of post-operative care for patients having a minor plastics procedure under local anaesthetic.
* Facilitate daily meetings to review referrals to the Plastic Trauma Service, actively discussing and managing referrals with the on-call Consultant, in line with established care pathways.
* Act as a key point of contact for the Plastic Trauma Service, which includes the co-ordination, scheduling and communication of patient appointments, diagnostic tests and surgical procedures.
* Participate in local clinical governance activities, including audits, research activities, staff teaching/training and quality improvement initiatives with support from the Lead Nurse.
* Confidently utilise a range of IT systems, including (but not limited to) the Oxford Acute Referral System (OARS), theatre scheduler and Electronic Patient Records (EPR).
* Adhere to local and Trust-wide protocols, policies and guidelines, consistently acting in accordance with the OUH Trust values.


Person Specification


Essential and desirable

* 6 month post registratation experience in ward/urgent care/acute setting
* Active registration with the NMC
* Competency in venepuncture/cannulation
* Experience in basic wound care
* Previous experience/training in Plastic Surgery
* Evidence of working as a specialist nurse
* Evidence of mentorship qualification / supporting students
* Previous experience/training in emergency or urgent care
