About the Role
At AO, we make things simple. We’re looking for a Tax Accountant to join our Group Finance team and ensure UK tax compliance runs smoothly. The role will support both direct and indirect tax responsibilities across VAT, corporate tax, and employment taxes.
Key Responsibilities
Tax compliance & reporting
* Review, validate and submit UK VAT returns prepared by finance teams across the Group
* Support VAT cashflow forecasting and help the business understand timing and impacts
* Assist with corporate tax compliance, including preparation and review of computations and returns
* Support more complex filings such as capital allowances, CIR, CBCR and Pillar 2
* Assist with the preparation of RDEC claims and related documentation
* Support annual employment tax reporting, including compliance submissions and reconciliations
* Help manage responses to HMRC queries, audits and information requests
Tax accounting
* Support interim and year‑end tax provisioning, including deferred tax calculations
* Assist with tax disclosures under IFRS, ensuring figures are accurate, well supported and clearly documented
* Work closely with Group Reporting to ensure tax balances are correctly reflected in the accounts
Supporting the wider business
* Provide tax input on new commercial activity, contracts, process changes and one‑off transactions
* Support tax aspects of systems or process improvements
* Help keep tax policies, working papers and controls clear, consistent and audit‑ready
* Get involved in ad‑hoc projects to support the Tax Manager and the wider Finance team
Experience
* UK tax experience, gained in either VAT, corporate tax or mixed tax compliance
* Hands‑on experience with tax compliance processes, returns and calculations
* Exposure to tax accounting, provisions or year‑end reporting (or a strong desire to develop in this area)
* Experience gained in practice or in‑house is welcome
Qualifications
* ATT or CTA qualified (or very close to qualification)
Core skills & strengths
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and sense‑check numbers
* High level of attention to detail, confidence in reviewing others’ work
* Solid understanding of IFRS accounting (or ability to build this quickly)
* Intermediate Excel skills, including working with large datasets and reconciliations
* Clear, confident communication skills – able to explain tax matters in a way that makes sense to non‑tax colleagues
* Organised, proactive and comfortable juggling deadlines
