Job Description:
Brief Description
You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be the first time you've considered a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to enable you to work safely and competently on the network.
If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently joined the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
About the role (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team's operatives.
Signalling & Telecoms. You'll work with equipment including signals that control train movements, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you'll develop a broad range of technical skills across manual, electrical, and digital equipment.
Our technicians work outdoors in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You could be involved in demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-conscious, rule-respecting, and a team player is critical, as you'll often work near moving trains traveling at high speed.
You matter to your team
A natural team player, you'll also be able to lead when asked by the team leader. You'll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet strict safety standards. You'll be a role model for safe working behaviors and confident to challenge potential safety risks to ensure everyone's safety.
You matter to us
Today’s technicians can become tomorrow’s team leaders.
Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will give you the skills and confidence to build a rewarding career in rail.
Our technicians are vital to our maintenance teams. While rail experience isn't mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Leadership – Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
* Effective communication – Strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
* Technical skills – Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
* Safety – Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and confidently challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving – Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping skills and knowledge up-to-date.
* Willingness to learn – Continuous development of skills and understanding of new standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification – Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent experience.
Additional role considerations
* Shifts – Includes days, nights, and weekends with a changing pattern.
* Outdoor working – Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safe working – Subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight examinations.
* Driving – Must have a valid category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute – Should reside within a 60-minute commute of the location.
