Overview

We are currently looking for housekeepers to join Rowan Ward at the Bristol Surgical Centre. The post holder will work as an integral part of the ward team. The role of Housekeeper will assist in the coordination of all patient facilities/services in the ward area and to ensure a clean, safe and comfortable environment.

The main elements of the role are ensuring the delivery of cleaning, catering and minor maintenance, together with other specified tasks to meet patient needs, as determined by the Senior Sister. The post holder will work closely with contractors and support services departments as directed by the Senior Sister. They will assist in maintaining quality standards and rectify deficiencies.

We have an exciting opportunity for housekeepers to join our friendly and dynamic Rowan Ward team within the NMSK Division. You must have the enthusiasm and desire to deliver a high quality service to our patients and their families. The candidate must have excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to work independently using their initiative and within a team ensuring a clean, safe environment is maintained for patient safety.


Responsibilities

* Ensure the ordering and distribution of patients meals and drinks and assist when needed, ensuring the ward is adequately stocked with consumables. Work with the multidisciplinary team to maintain high standards of cleanliness of both the ward environment and clinical equipment.
* Assist with preparing and serving hot/cold snacks (e.g. breakfast) as requested, offering a 24 hour snack service.
* Serve meals in conjunction with the nursing team, ensuring patients' dietary needs are met and intake is monitored.
* Provide eating assistance (e.g. cutting up food, helping patients reach food) and offer friendly encouragement to patients regarding eating.
* Prepare hot/cold beverages and ensure appropriate trolley/equipment is ready at scheduled times.
* Ensure meals and beverages are served at the correct temperatures according to food hygiene regulations and Trust operational policy.
* Prepare areas where food and beverages are served/consumed to create a pleasant environment for patients.
* Wash all equipment/utensils used in preparation, regeneration, serving and consuming food and beverages at breakfast and during beverage rounds.
* Check that the ward kitchen is clean and tidy at all times, including stock rotation and disposal of out-of-date food.
* Ensure refrigerated food is labelled and stored correctly according to Trust operational policy.
* Coordinate with ward staff to action discharged and newly admitted patients’ meal requirements and co-ordinate extra meal requirements as they arise.
* Ensure patients with non-restricted fluid intake have access to fresh water.
* Maintain the environment by monitoring and auditing service delivery related to cleaning, food, linen and the environment; inform the ward sister of outcomes.
* Assist in completing the ward defect log book, ensuring defects are logged, reported, recorded and closed as appropriate.
* Assist in co-ordinating other ad hoc maintenance with the support service helpdesk as required.
* Assist the Senior Sister in carrying out regular equipment monitoring in accordance with procedures.
* Transport and dispose of clinical, domestic and confidential waste as per policy, e.g. taking waste to the ward disposal area with the PST.
* Participate with ward staff in monitoring access, security and use of premises and facilities.
* Respect patients’ space and attend to patients’ perishable items (e.g. fruit); respect privacy and dignity while carrying out housekeeping duties.
* Liaise with the Senior Sister regarding potential adverse behaviour and security breaches; use communication skills to manage and prevent aggressive or abusive behaviour and escalate as necessary.
* Ensure the safe storage of equipment and that equipment is in good working order; ensure repairs are carried out in line with Trust policy.
* Assist in maintaining and updating paper-based records and information as required.
* Respond to requests for general information; pass on information to others while maintaining confidentiality.
* Understand the Trust’s Complaints Procedure and act accordingly.
* Assist with training of staff involved with ward housekeeping services, explaining required standards.
* Be aware of new food hygiene standards and changes to waste categorization.
