About the Role
Biopharma Group is expanding its CDMO operations and seeking an experienced Senior Laboratory Scientist to join its team in Winchester, UK.
This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of lyophilisation (aka freeze-drying) and formulation development, supporting a range of client projects and proprietary R&D projects.
You will be part of a collaborative and technically focused R&D team, working closely with both internal specialists and external clients across a variety of pharmaceutical and biotech programmes.
Core Responsibilities
· Perform contract laboratory analysis, formulation development, and cycle development for client projects in freeze-dried and liquid formulation formats.
· Design and execute studies to support client projects, including formulation development from early stage screening through to optimisation and finalisation.
· Lead or manage research on proprietary R&D projects, including those funded by UK government or European Commission programmes.
· Prepare written reports for laboratory, consultancy, and proprietary R and D work.
· Act as a technical point of contact for selected clients.
· Contribute to laboratory operations including upkeep.
· Provide input into the development of new analytical instruments or technical capabilities.
· Contribute to business development activities to support company growth and new services.
· Support the expansion and development of the company’s quality system, including identifying opportunities to strengthen compliance, for example ISO or GLP frameworks.
Skills and Experience
· Degree or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
· Experience working in a laboratory environment within pharmaceutical, biotech, contract research, or diagnostics settings.
· Experience or strong interest in formulation development across small molecules and biologics, from early stage design through to optimised formulations.
· Understanding of drug delivery systems, including parenteral formulations.
· Experience in lyophilisation and related drying processes.
· Ability to interpret experimental data and prepare clear, structured reports.
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both internal teams and clients.
Desirable
· Experience with lyophilisation cycle development.
· Familiarity with thermal analysis techniques such as DSC or freeze drying microscopy.
· Experience working within GMP or regulated environments.
· Exposure to client facing project work.
· Experience contributing to quality systems within regulated environments such as ISO or GLP.
· Awareness of the diagnostics market and associated product requirements.
